Best Yarn for Fall Knit and Crochet
What kind of yarn is best for fall?
As knitters and crocheters, we often get excited to make things as soon as the weather cools in early fall. Those chunky, wool, and cozy yarns are starting to fill the shop shelves and we can get overwhelmed. However, it’s best to get familiar with the variety of textures and colors first so that you can narrow down your favorites. Knowing what you love and what suits autumn projects will help you choose and plan your fall yarn projects.
The first thing you may want to choose is the size of the yarn. Fall is a great time to introduce bulky yarns for projects (size 5 and up), since those are designed to keep you warmer. Medium weight (aka worsted weight) yarn is probably the most popular size for projects as well. Look for size 4 and 3 for these. The thinner and lighter yarns (size 2 and less) are better suited to spring and summer crafts or tiny ornaments, so you may not need them this season (unless you’re making socks).
Suggestions for the best yarns for fall…
1. Acrylic Yarn (with a focus on fall colors)
By far one of the most popular yarns crafters work with is acrylic yarn, which is a manufactured synthetic. You might be wondering…”is acrylic yarn good for fall?” Acrylic can get fuzzy (especially after washes) and isn’t too breathable, but that may not matter much with the types of fall projects you tackle. Since the weather begins to feel crisp, you may not want your wearables to be very breathable anyway. One big benefit to acrylic yarns is that they are more affordable.
I’ve chosen some cozy choices for soft or blended acrylics below (click on the photos to view). The warm fall colors can be found in various sizes:
Chunky (size 5 and above) Acrylic Yarn and Polyester Yarn :
The orange and green colors shown below add a pop to typical fall colors. I used the Oklahoma City Green yarn for my HAND WARMERS KNIT PATTERN and I love how the chunky yarns add both texture and color. Hand warmers are great projects for the fall, since mittens aren’t quite necessary yet.
The warm brown ‘Go for Faux’ thick yarn would make a great scarf!
Medium Acrylic Yarn (size 4):
Pumpkin, brown, and taupe colors exude autumn warmth…
The DOLLAR TREE has some fall-inspired acrylic yarn, and you can buy skeins in bulk. 120 yard skeins for just $1.25 each!!
2. Wool Yarn (or wool blend)
Wool yarns (or those that have a mix of wool) are smart choices for fall wearables and blankets, since they are meant to keep you warm. Keep in mind that wool can feel itchy to sensitive skin, so a wool blend may be ideal.
Chunky Wool Yarn (size 5 and above):
There is also room for cream colors in autumn – they pair very well with vivid pumpkin orange or cranberry hues.
These roving wool skeins are nice fall season selections for soft scarves and throws…
Medium Wool Yarn (size 4):

3. Blended Color Yarn (variegated color blends)
Many hues of autumn are showcased in these fall variegated yarns, especially orange, cream, and taupe.
Chunky Blended Yarn (size 5 and above):
Medium Blended Yarn (size 4):
4. Sturdy Cotton Yarn
Lastly, one of my favorite supplies to make fall projects with is cotton cord or rope. You can find sturdy cotton cord in thick sizes to use for hefty projects such as autumn baskets or wall hangings. Size 4 cotton yarn is also a fitting choice for fall placemats, coasters, or dish cloths.
5. Chenille Yarn
You can’t beat the soft texture of chenille yarn. These choices can be used to make the snuggliest fall throw blankets…
I am curious – how do you choose yarn for crocheting in the fall? Do you look at the colors first to determine yarn for fall crochet? Or perhaps start with the yarn size you know you want to work with? For instance, this is a great season to bring out the chunkier size yarns. Or do you try to find a fall pattern you love before you decide what type of yarn you will need?
And if you knit, how do you choose yarn for knitting in the fall? Maybe you want to create a sweater or cable vest and need the best yarn for fall knitting projects. The yarns above may inspire you.
Patterns for Fall Knit and Crochet
What kind of patterns are best for fall knit and crochet?
Now that you have perused some favorite yarns for fall crafts, the fun begins when you can find fall knit patterns or fall crochet patterns. The best type of stitches for these projects will be closed stitches. Cable stitch patterns are also popular during these months. Closed stitch patterns, as opposed to open-weave, will ensure a wearable item will keep its warmth. Classic ribbing with basic crochet stitches or knit and purl combinations are often showcased in fall patterns. Fall is also a fitting time to stitch up a crochet afghan pattern, or add leaf and acorn embellishments to a piece.
Shawls, scarves, cowls, headbands, hats, mitts (aka fingerless mittens or hand warmers), ponchos, and boot cuffs are fabulous ideas for fall yarn projects. Use autumnal colors for this season, such as earth tones, ambers, vivid orange & cranberry, and neutrals. No surprise here that my favorite yarn colors are in the neutral category, so I always have them on hand to pair with bolder choices.
