How to Make a Crochet Scarf for Fall
What scarf to crochet for fall?
When you’re considering making a crochet scarf this fall, opt for a simple, repetitive pattern using interesting yarn. This free fall crochet scarf pattern is worked in one long rectangle, simply repeating the same row pattern for many rows. The variegated yarn is what makes the result so interesting, as the changing colors really pop with the textured stitch pattern.

FALL SCARF CROCHET PATTERN
Gauge: 4″ (10cm) square = approx. 4 ‘shells’ by 10 rows.
How do you crochet a fringe scarf?
NOTES: First you will work in a repetitive shell pattern to create one long rectangle. Next, you can block the rectangle to a 6.5″ width by 54″ length. Lastly, you will add fringe to the two short ends of scarf and an optional ‘handmade’ leather tag. The pdf pattern has photo tutorials for the stitches and for adding the fringe.
What yarn is best for this fall crochet scarf?
Variegated chunky yarn is the best choice for this scarf. Since the shell pattern is so repetitive, you want to add interest with the changing colors found in variegated yarn. You also want to use yarn that will keep you cozy warm in fall, such as wool or wool blend choices.
Instructions to make the fall crochet scarf are as follows…
Chunky Crochet Scarf Pattern
NOTE – First Ch 1 does not count as a st.
Special Stitch in pattern:
Shell: (sc, 2 dc) in designated st or ch.
Beginning with the Size J (6mm) hook, chain 23 stitches with your SCARFIE YARN.
Row 1: Shell in 2nd ch from hook, sk 2 ch, *shell in next ch, sk 2 ch; rep from * to last ch, 1 sc in last ch. Turn. (7 shells, 1 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, shell in 1st sc, *sk 2 dc, shell in next sc; rep from * to last sc, 1 sc in last sc. Turn.
Rep Row 2 until you reach the end of your skein or desired length.
(For reference, I worked 132 rows total with one skein until my scarf measured 54″).
Fasten off.
Finishing
Block the rectangle to 6.5″ width by 54″ length if desired.
Weave in all loose ends.
Optional: Sew a ‘Handmade’ tag to one long side of the scarf using coordinating thread and a sewing needle. (You don’t want to sew it to a short edge, since that is where the fringe will go.)
Optional: Add fringe to each short side of the scarf. Each fringe is made up of 5 strands of 15″ coordinating yarn (size 4). THESE INSTRUCTIONS may be helpful on how to add fringe to a scarf.
Important Tips for Crocheting your fall scarf
Some things to keep in mind as you crochet the scarf are:
- Pay attention to pattern so that you always begin and end each row with sc stitch. (after turning chain)
- The crochet scarf is reversible. Either side can be the Right Side (RS).
- It may help to place a stitch marker at the first single crochet (sc) on each row to keep track of where to place the last sc in subsequent rows.
- Feel free to adjust the size of the scarf as follows: Adjust # of rows worked for a longer or shorter length (you can use more than one skein if you want a longer scarf).
Finished Size
The finished crochet scarf measures approximately 6.5″ width by 68″ length with fringe.
Wearing Your Fall Crochet Scarf

What do you think of this free autumn scarf crochet pattern? If you are a beginner at crochet, you can definitely handle this. The shell pattern is simple to master, and it’s repeated for all the rows. You can watch TV, listen to a podcast, or sit outside enjoying nature while you work. I personally did all of those things while I crocheted this particular scarf.
