EASY Crochet Headband Pattern FREE {for beginners}

In case you haven’t heard, I live in New England in the U.S. I love its’ history, beauty, and 4 distinct seasons. What I don’t love is feeling cold. I think I have a low tolerance for cold weather, but I can always get by with cozy warm clothing & accessories. It is no wonder that I enjoy crochet hats and headbands to cover my head & ears. I believe a crochet headband in particular can provide a beautiful, classic accessory that is both stylish and functional.

If you are looking for an easy crochet pattern, a headband is a great project to start with. They are very beginner friendly and can make great gifts!

I’m sharing an easy crochet headband pattern today, which can be easily adjusted for different sizes for adults. The free crochet pattern as written should fit a teen or woman, but you can adjust the size to fit a smaller or larger head size. I’ve got all the details for the headband in the free pattern below, so keep reading.

Headband Crochet Pattern

The idea behind an easy crochet headband pattern is to work in rows with BASIC CROCHET STITCHES. Rather than working in the round, you can work rows for the desired circumference of your headband and then seam the short ends together. Once finished, the headband (aka ear warmer) can be embellished with a ‘Handmade’ leather tag or cinched at the front center.

The following is a list of supplies you would need to create one crochet ear warmer. Feel free to use similar yarn (size 6, super bulky yarn) and the same size crochet hook to make your own. This is a great way to use up just one skein of yarn. You can make crochet headbands in under 30 minutes each!

PATTERN INFORMATION

I enjoy naming my crochet and knit patterns after local New England places of interest.

This “Haverhill Headband” is named after the local town of Haverhill, MA. It’s a pretty New England town near the New Hampshire border. The wheat yarn color of the warm headband gives a classic and neutral look that will never go out of style.

Beginner Ear Warmer Crochet Pattern

How to crochet a headband for beginners

It is very easy to crochet a headband using basic stitches and simple techniques!

Here I will walk you through the simple crochet pattern to make a fun headband.

Gauge: 4″ (10cm) square = 7 sts by 6 rows (gauge is not critical).

The headband should fit a teen or woman, with 18″ finished circumference. Since the yarn stretches a bit, it will fit a 20-21″ head size. Take a head measurement by wrapping a tape measure around the forehead and back of head.

No matter the head’s circumference of your intended recipient, you can adjust the size of the crochet headband easily. Just skip down to read the “Tips” section to see how.

NOTE –

  • The first Ch 1 in each round does not count as a st.
  • Headband will be worked in rows, then the short sides will be seamed together.
  • The pattern is reversible, so you can choose which side for RS.

Rows 3-28: Rep Row 2. (or until desired circumference)

Use a sl st to join the two short ends of the headband together in a seam.

Weave in loose ends to your chosen WS.

That’s it! Just a combination of working easy stitches in simple rows.

Important Tips for Crocheting your Headband

Some things to keep in mind as you work the headband crochet pattern are:

  • Note that the pattern is reversible, so you can choose your desired Right Side and Wrong Side.
  • Note that you can optionally ‘cinch’ the front center of the headband as instructed.
  • Feel free to alter the size of the headband as follows:
    • to adjust width, chain more or less stitches to a multiple of 2
    • to adjust circumference, work more or less rows
    • (you can try on the headband as you go and adjust the circumference as desired)

Finished Size

The finished headband measures approximately 4″ width by 18″ head circumference. Feel free to block the headband if you wish, but it is not necessary.

Crocheted Headbands

Just pull the headband (ear warmer) over your head and ears to feel the warmth! You could also wear the headband under your hairline, or with a high ponytail. Feel free to embellish your headband with a customized leather tag. It will add just that unique touch.

You could also customize the headband by using different colors for the yarn. Use your favorite solid color for the main headband, and perhaps a different color yarn for the cinching.

The crochet ear warmers would make a perfect gift. And they are such a quick project that you can make several in one afternoon! Each headband doesn’t take much yarn, so it is a great project for using up your leftover yarn.
