This easy crochet headband pattern uses only two basic stitches, so it’s perfect if you’re newer to crochet or just want a fast, satisfying project.

I enjoy naming my crochet and knit patterns after local New England places of interest. This “Haverhill Headband” is named after the local town of Haverhill, MA, a pretty New England town near the New Hampshire border. The wheat yarn color gives this warm headband a classic, neutral look that will never go out of style.

Beginner Ear Warmer Crochet Pattern
How to Crochet a Headband for Beginners
It’s very easy to crochet a headband using basic stitches and simple techniques. Here I’ll walk you through the pattern step by step to make a fun, cozy headband.
Gauge: 4″ (10cm) square = 7 sts by 6 rows (gauge is not critical for this project).
The headband as written has an 18″ finished circumference, fitting a teen or woman. Since the yarn stretches a bit, it will comfortably fit a 20-21″ head size. Take a head measurement by wrapping a tape measure around the forehead and back of the head.
No matter the head circumference of your intended recipient, you can easily adjust the size of the headband — just skip down to the Tips section below.
Notes:
- The first ch 1 in each row does not count as a stitch.
- The headband is worked in rows, then the short sides are seamed together.
- The pattern is reversible, so you can choose which side you’d like as the RS.
Ear Warmer Headband Pattern
With size M/N-13 (9mm) hook, chain 8 with size 6 yarn.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *dc in next ch, sc in next ch; rep from * across. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *dc in next dc, sc in next sc; rep from * across.
Turn. (7 sts)
Rows 3-28: Rep Row 2. (or until desired circumference)
Do not fasten off.
Use a sl st to join the two short ends of the headband together in a seam.
Fasten off.
Weave in loose ends to your chosen WS.
That’s it! Just a combination of working easy stitches in simple rows.
Optional Finishing Touches
Sew an optional ‘Handmade’ leather tag to the lower edge of your headband.
You can also cinch your headband at the center as follows:
- Chain 8 stitches with your yarn
- Wrap the chain around the front center of the headband
- Join with a sl st to the first ch at the back of the headband
- Fasten off and secure
Finished Size
The finished headband measures approximately 4″ wide by 18″ head circumference.
Important Tips for Crocheting Your Headband
- The pattern is reversible, so you can choose your desired Right Side and Wrong Side.
- You can optionally ‘cinch’ the front center of the headband as instructed above.
- To adjust the width, chain more or fewer stitches in a multiple of 2.
- To adjust the circumference, work more or fewer rows. Try the headband on as you go and adjust until it fits.
- Feel free to block the headband if you’d like, but it isn’t necessary.
