PATTERN INFORMATION

I enjoy naming my crochet and knit patterns after local New England places of interest.

This “Portsmouth Poncho” is named after the town of Portsmouth, NH, where you can experience both autumn foliage sights and coastal appeal in east coast New Hampshire. This classic fall poncho makes a lovely fashion statement inspired by this bustling New England port.

STYLISH FREE CROCHET PONCHO PATTERN

Gauge: 4″ (10cm) square = 12 sts by 8 rows (of rows 2-9 pattern repeat).

There are different styles of ponchos, and this one has a triangular shape on the front and back, created by joining two rectangular panels together.

NOTES: First you will work in stitch pattern to create 2 rectangle panels. Block panels to size. Next, you will join the two panels with seams as instructed. Lastly, you will add a finished neckline and edging in a contrasting color. Feel free to use the main color for the entire poncho if you do not want contrasting edging. (You would need another skein of main color for this). The pdf pattern has step-by-step photo tutorials.

Instructions to make the fall crochet poncho are as follows…

Seam together the 2 panels with MC yarn.

Using size I-9 crochet hook,

Neckline

Add a neckline as follows:

Using size I-9 crochet hook,

With RS facing, insert hook and join CC yarn at a seam at neck. Using a SM to keep track of 1st sc in round, work 5 rounds as follows:

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in 68 sts around. Join with sl st to first sc. Turn. (68 sts)

Rnd 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in FLO of each st around. Join with sl st to first sc. Turn.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st around. Join with sl st to first sc. Turn. Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in FLO of each st around. Join with sl st to first sc. Turn.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with sl st to first sc.

Fasten off.

Bottom Edging

Add an edging to the bottom of the poncho as follows:

Using size I-9 crochet hook,

With RS facing, join CC yarn at a seam at bottom. Using a SM to keep track of 1st sc in round, work 2 rounds as follows:

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, work 47 sc sts across row edges of each panel and 81 sc sts across bottom sc row of each panel, working 3 additional sc sts in the 2 corner ‘points’ of the poncho. Join with sl st to first sc. Turn. (262 sts)

(262 = 47 + 81 + 3 at point + 47 + 81 + 3 at point)

Rnd 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in FLO of each st around. Join with sl st to first sc.

Fasten off.

Weave in ALL ends.

Important Tips for Crocheting your fall poncho

Some things to keep in mind as you crochet the poncho are:

  • The Right Side (RS) of the panels & finished edges are worked on odd numbered rows/rounds.
  • It may help to place a stitch marker (SM) at the 1st st (3rd ch or 1st sc) on each row of panels to keep track of where to begin and end rows (first st and last st).
  • Be sure to put RS together when seaming two panels together.
  • Use a SM to keep track of 1st st in each round of neckline and bottom edging.

Finished Size

The finished crochet poncho measures approximately 31″ width (wingspan) by 24″ length, with 24″ neck circumference. It should fit up to 44″ bust size.

If I search the stash first and find a few fibers for this I will have it ready for this fall. I’ll make the frist one is the correct weight of yarn but then I have some other weights of yarn which I know will need to have more stitches to get it started. Looks very promising to me thanks so much.
