Supplies & Materials Needed

To make this summer cotton poncho, you’ll need the following:

Yarn

  • Yarn Weight: Cotton Worsted (Size 4)
  • Fiber: 100% cotton or a cotton-blend (linen-cotton or bamboo-cotton blends also work beautifully for added drape and sheen)
  • Yardage: Approximately 535 yards depending on your desired size (see sizing notes in the pattern)
  • Yarn used in sample: 3 skeins of Lion Brand Pima Cotton (186 yds/3.5 oz/100g per skein) in color “Vintage”

Yarn Substitution Tip: Look for yarns labeled “summer yarn,” “cotton yarn,” or “beach yarn” at your local yarn shop. Avoid wool or acrylic for this project. Cotton and plant-based fibers are what give this poncho its gorgeous drape and breathability. Find great summer yarn ideas here.

Needles

  • US size 15 (10 mm) circular knitting needles, 29″ or longer
  • Note: Needle size may be adjusted based on your gauge and desired fabric drape — see gauge section below

Finished Size

Length (top to bottom): 20″

Width (double-folded panel): 26″

Feel free to adjust size as follows:

  • cast on half the number of sts for a one-layer poncho and fold just once
  • cast on more sts for a wider width poncho
  • work more/less rows on the panel to adjust length top-down

Poncho Panel

With size 15 needles, CO 220 sts with size 4 yarn.

Customize → If you would like a lighter one-layer poncho (instead of a doubled layer), then cast on half the number of sts (110) and fold widthwise just once before blocking and seaming the top.

Garter Stitch Pattern:

Row 1 : Knit.

Rep Row 1 until length reaches approx 20″ or your desired length from top to bottom (approx 50 rows).

Bind off.

Finishing the Poncho

Blocking:

Fold the panel together widthwise twice prior to blocking.

(Fold just once if you worked half the number of stitches).

Wet the folded panel and block it to approx 26” width by 20” length (or desired length).

After blocking, keep the panel folded.

Use a locking stitch marker to mark the width of your neckline opening on the top of the panel, approx 12-14″ (or desired neckline width) from the double-folded edge.

Seam Top:

Using a tapestry needle and your yarn, work a seam to join the top edges of the panel together to form the closed top of the poncho, leaving the neckline open from the double-folded edge to the stitch marker.

Weave in all loose ends to WS.

Tips to Customize Your Summer Poncho

One of the best things about this pattern is how easy it is to make it your own. Here are some fun ways to personalize your knit summer poncho:

Change the Length

  • Cropped version: Work fewer rows for a shorter, bolero-style poncho that hits closer to the bust. Perfect over high-waisted skirts.
  • Max length: Add extra rows for a dramatic, bohemian poncho that doubles as a beach cover-up.

Add Fringe

Fringe is having a major fashion moment and it would look incredible on this poncho. Cut lengths of your yarn (or a coordinating yarn) and attach fringe along the bottom hem using a crochet hook. Instant Boho glamour.

Play with Color

  • Solid: A single rich color lets the garter stitch texture shine. Think white, terracotta, sage green, or deep navy.
  • Two-tone: Knit the panel alternating a group of rows in coordinating colors for a stylish striped look.
  • Ombre or gradient: Use a hand-dyed or self-striping yarn for beautiful color transitions without any extra effort.

Try a Different Yarn Fiber

  • Linen yarn gives a more structured, crisp fabric with gorgeous natural drape and is perfect for a relaxed, European feel.
  • Bamboo yarn is incredibly silky and has beautiful sheen, which is nice for a dressier, elevated look.
  • Cotton-linen blend offers the best of both worlds: softness, structure, and breathability.

Add a Neck Detail

Finish the neckline with a simple row of single crochet, or even a loose, rolled collar for a cozy, elevated finish.

Embellish

Sew on a wooden button or a vintage brooch at the neckline to add a personal touch and give the poncho a polished, put-together look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this poncho pattern really beginner friendly?

Absolutely. If you’ve completed your very first knitting project, like a simple scarf or dishcloth, you have everything you need to knit this poncho. The garter stitch pattern is the same basic knit stitch you already know, repeated in a simple sequence. There are no yarn-overs, no cables, no complicated decreases. Just knit.

How long will this poncho take to knit?

For most knitters, this project takes about 1–2 weeks of casual knitting (think: evenings and weekends). Because the stitch pattern is so mindless and meditative, many knitters find they make faster progress than expected. It’s the kind of project you can knit while watching TV or chatting with friends.

What size does this pattern make?

This pattern includes instructions for one size (26″ width by 20″ length). The poncho style is naturally very forgiving and adjustable, though. You can easily add or subtract rows to customize the fit.

Can I use a different yarn than cotton?

Yes! While cotton yarn is ideal for warm weather wearability, you can absolutely use linen, bamboo, or a plant-fiber blend. If you want a year-round version, a light wool-cotton blend could work beautifully for transitional seasons. Avoid heavy wools for a summer poncho because they’ll be too warm and won’t have the right drape.

What does “garter stitch” mean?

Garter stitch is the simplest knitting stitch there is: you just knit every single row. When knitted flat (back and forth on straight or circular needles), knitting every row creates the classic garter stitch ridges. In this poncho pattern, using large sized needles for the garter stitch repeat creates an open, mesh-like texture that looks like lace.

Do I need circular needles?

Yes, circular needles are recommended for this project because of the number of stitches. You’ll use them to knit back and forth (flat), not in the round. If you’re new to circular needles, don’t worry. They work just like straight needles for flat knitting; they just have more room for all those stitches.

Can I sell items made from this free pattern?

Yes! Items made from this free pattern may be sold, but would appreciate a mention that the pattern came from “A Box of Twine”. If you share your finished poncho on social media, I’d love to see it. Tag me @ABoxofTwine on Instagram so I can celebrate your beautiful work!

How do I wash a cotton knitted poncho?

Most cotton yarns are machine washable on a gentle/delicate cycle in cold water. Always check your specific yarn’s care label. Lay flat to dry to preserve the shape and prevent stretching.
