The idea behind the knit bag pattern is to work in rows to create one long rectangle. You will use BASIC KNIT STITCHES for the knit tote bag pattern, as well as increase & decrease stitches. Advanced Beginner skills are needed, due to the increase & decrease stitches.
The following is a list of supplies required to create one knit bag. Use similar yarn (size 6, Super Bulky weight yarn) and the same knitting needle size to make your own.

How to Knit a Bag
Here I will walk you through each step of this stylish market bag, using your favorite Super Bulky Weight Yarn color.
Finished Measurements:
- Measurements are for finished bag without straps attached
Length : 10 inches
Width : 13 inches
Gauge: 4″ (10cm) square = approx 10 sts by 11 rows in check pattern (not critical)

FREE Knitting Bag Pattern
NOTES –
You will be knitting the bag in one long rectangle in rows, them seaming sides.
Follow the instructions below in the order indicated.
Top of One Side of Bag
With size 15 (10 mm) needles, CO 30 sts with size 6 yarn.
Ridged Eyelet Pattern
Rows 1-3: Knit across.
Row 4 (WS): P1, *yo, p2tog; rep from * to last st, p1.
Rows 5-7: Knit across.
Row 8: P1, *p2tog, yo; rep from * to last st, p1.
Sides and Bottom of Bag
Check Pattern
Row 1 (RS): K2, *p2, k2; rep from * to end.
Row 2: P2, *k2, p2; rep from * to end.
Rows 3-4: Rep Rows 1-2.
Row 5: Rep Row 2.
Row 6: Rep Row 1.
Rows 7-8: Rep Rows 5-6.
Rows 9-48: Rep Rows 1-8 of check pattern five more times, making sure to end on a WS row.
Top of 2nd Side of Bag
Ridged Eyelet Pattern (Mirrored)
Row 1: P1, *p2tog, yo; rep from * to last st, p1.
Rows 2-4: Knit across.
Row 5: P1, *yo, p2tog; rep from * to last st, p1.
Rows 6-8: Knit across.
BO.
Finishing
Block piece if desired.
Fold the bag rectangle WS together, and align sides.
SEAM sides of bag as follows using an invisible seam (aka mattress/ladder seam):
- Left Side: Use lighter weight scrap yarn (in a similar color) and a tapestry needle to join the sides of the bag together with an invisible vertical seam at left side from the bottom of the bag to the top.
- Right Side: Likewise, work an invisible vertical seam to join the sides of the bag together at right side from the bottom of the bag to the top.
Weave in ends to the WS (inside) of the bag.
Attach strap(s) to the top edges of the bag.

Important Tips for Knitting your bag
Some things to keep in mind as you work the checked bag knit pattern are:
- Use a stitch marker to mark the RS of bag if desired.
- The Right Side (RS) of the bag will face you as you knit odd-numbered rows.
