- Next, join the sleeves to the top sides of the front and back with a seam. Be sure to center the sleeves evenly across the front and back.
- Fold front piece over back piece and join the sides and sleeves together with seams, starting at bottom of sides.

Weave in all loose ends on the WS (inside) of the sweater.

Knit Summer Sweater
The loose fitting knit sweater makes a great layering piece in the summer. The stylish design of this easy sweater is fun & trendy with the cropped length & loose sleeves – you’re bound to get compliments from making this beautiful pattern. Personally, I think the best part is the mesh lace look. Isn’t it amazing the texture you can knit with bigger needles?
Like a layered look? Wear the knit sweater over a tank top or swimsuit during the warm months. You can wear it with different outfits – jeans, shorts, skirt, or leggings. It is the perfect knit sweater to provide a little bit of extra warmth without being too hot. Both my daughter and I love this mesh sweater, so I may have to fight her for it this season….

This is gorgeous and exactly what I want for a festival next summer. Just wondered if it can be done on 2 single point needles? I’m not a complete beginner but never made a garment other than a scarf so I may have not noticed a reason why it calls for circular needles. Thanks!
Susan
Thanks Annabel, glad you like the pattern. I recommended circular needles since they would be long enough to hold all of the stitches. You could certainly use straight needles if you are comfortable they would hold your stitches. This is probably more of an issue with the front and back panels, versus the sleeves. Enjoy!

Why can’t you knit the front and back at the same time in a circular pattern and then stop when you get to the underarms?
Win – win with no seaming for most of the pattern.
Thank you!
Susan
Hi Melissa, thanks for the comment. I love feedback! Yes, you could certainly knit both the front and back in a circular pattern bottom up until underarms, but you would need to alternate knit rounds with purl rounds to achieve the garter stitch pattern. I designed the pattern in the simplest structure for beginners especially. I don’t mind seaming, but I know that some folks do, so your option is certainly one to consider. 🙂

Oh Susan this top is exactly what I needed to see today! I’m in a bit of a bummed slump in my knitting world as one yarn for a project didn’t work out for me and the other is paining my hands a lot so I am just picking away at that one. I really want to knit something and couldn’t figure out what and walk I come to your blog and here is this gorgeous Summer Top! I’m using a Size 2 cotton yarn so for the Small I’ll be using the instructions for the Size M to accommodate the difference in yarn weight. I’ll send you a photo when I’m finished along with notes on any modifications I may make. 🙂
Susan
So happy to hear that, Linnea! And yes, the sweater is easily customizable. You can really make the panels any width that works for you and just work garter stitch to the length. I’d love to see any photos of your finished sweater – thank you!
