How to crochet a dishcloth

The free dishcloth pattern is easy to work once you master one row of stitching. The dishcloth is worked back and forth, with just 15 rows total. You only need to know the single crochet (sc) and chain stitch (ch) to work this piece – simple stitches!

How much yarn needed for dishcloth? The great news is that you need just under 40 yards from one skein of the Bernat Maker Home Dec cotton cord yarn! This is enough to make one dish cloth, plus you will have plenty of yarn leftover in the skein to make the coordinating NAPKIN RINGS and COASTERS

PATTERN INFORMATION

Recently I began naming my crochet and knit patterns after local New England places of interest.

This “Newbury Dishcloth” is named after the picturesque town of Newbury, MA. It is a quiet, rural town north of Boston with beautiful old farmhouses. I can imagine earlier residents rolling up their sleeves to spring clean their homes with fervor and love. I think they would appreciate the simplicity and texture of crocheted dishcloths.

The FREE crochet dishcloth pattern is provided below.

Important Tips for Crocheting your dishcloth

Some things to keep in mind as you crochet the dish cloth are:

  • Try to count sts after each row to ensure you didn’t drop or add any stitch. Alternatively, you could place stitch markers at the beginning and end sc sts of each row to keep track.
  • Feel free to adjust the width by adjusting the number of chained sts, ensuring an even number of chains.
  • Feel free to adjust the length by adjusting the number of rows worked for a longer or shorter length.

Finished Size

The finished dishcloth measures approximately 6.75″ square as written.  The added loop is about 1.5″ height.

First time commenting on a pattern and I really like how this stitch pattern works. When I found your pattern I only had regular cotton yarn and not bulky. It made me wonder if this could be worked up with a 1/2 dbl chrochet to give it a little more bulk. I am interested in working with the bulky cotton though & wil use your affiliation when I do order some. Thanks for sharing!!! Very relaxing to work these up !

Hello Amy, thanks so much for reaching out – I am honored that this was your first comment on a pattern! Cotton yarn is a great choice for a dishcloth, and I think you could definitely use a smaller size yarn and either double it up or try the pattern with a half double crochet instead of single crochet as you suggested. Thanks so much for considering using my affiliation. I’m so happy that you like the pattern!
      Best, Susan
