
How to Crochet a Washcloth
If we have to clean with washcloths, we may as well make them lovely! I love it when functional pieces exude beauty, too. Crochet is the perfect craft for washcloths, as it provides endless variations of stitches for both function and beauty. How about an easy crochet washcloth pattern that uses bulky cotton yarn and works up quickly? If you love eco friendly washcloth patterns and crochet washcloth patterns, you will really enjoy the spa-like texture of this one. The ‘Snowy Suds’ washcloth is made with the popular Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn in the color ‘Cream’, and is reminiscent of suds in the bath.

How to crochet a washcloth
The free washcloth pattern is easy to work once you master the 4-row pattern repeat. The washcloth is worked back and forth, with just 21 rows total.
How much yarn needed for washcloth? The great news is that you need just 65 yards from one skein of the Bernat Maker Home Dec cotton cord yarn! This is enough to make one wash cloth, plus you will have plenty of yarn leftover in the skein to make more.
You will need the following supplies to make the spring cleaning crochet washcloth:
Supplies
- Size J (6 mm) hook
- 65 yards from 1 skein (approx. 317 yards) of size 5 Bulky cotton cord yarn. I used BERNAT MAKER HOME DEC in color CREAM.
- scissors
- tapestry needle
Crochet Abbreviations
US Crochet terms are used.
Ch – chain
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
st(s) – stitch(es)
BLO – back loop only
rep – repeat
RS – Right Side
WS – Wrong Side

WASHCLOTH FREE CROCHET PATTERN

Gauge: 4″ (10cm) square = approx. 12 sts by 10 rows (in pattern). NOTE – gauge is not critical.
How do you make an easy crochet washcloth?
NOTES: You will be crocheting the washcloth in straight rows. You will work the pattern for 21 rows total, then add a border with single crochet stitches around. Lastly, add a loop for hanging.
Instructions are as follows…
Crochet Washcloth Pattern
Special Stitch in Pattern:
- 2 dc-cl (2 Double Crochet Cluster): Yo, insert your hook into the designated st, yo, pull up a loop. Yo, pull through 2 loops. Yo, insert your hook into the same stitch, yo, pull up a loop. Yo, pull through 2 loops. Yo, pull through remaining 3 loops to complete the 2 Double Crochet Cluster Stitch. (push st toward RS)
Beginning with the Size J (6mm) hook, chain 26 stitches with your BULKY COTTON CORD YARN.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (25 sts throughout)
Pattern Repeat (4 rows):
Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in BLO of 1st st, *2 dc-cl in BLO of next st, sc in BLO of next 3 sts; rep from * across. Turn.
Row 3 (RS): Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st across. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, *sc in BLO of next 3 sts, 2 dc-cl in BLO of next st; rep from * across until last st, sc in BLO of last st. Turn.
Row 5: Rep Row 3.
Work Pattern Repeat (Rows 2-5) four more times. (21 rows total)
Do NOT turn.
Border Edge around Washcloth :
Going forward, you will be working in one long round.
Work 1 sc in each row down the side of the washcloth, 3 sc in corner,
1 sc in each st across bottom of washcloth, 3 sc in corner,
1 sc in each row up other side of washcloth, 3 sc in corner,
1 sc in each st across top of washcloth, 2 sc in last corner,
Add optional loop to washcloth as follows:
- chain for 3″,
- join with a sl st to corner st,
1 last sc in corner,
join with a sl st to first st. (approx 104 sts total, not counting ch’s for loop)
Finishing Washcloth
Fasten off.
Weave in ends.
Block piece if desired, to make an even square.

Important Tips for Crocheting your Washcloth
Some things to keep in mind as you crochet the wash cloth are:
- Note that you will be working 25 sts every row – there are no increases or decreases.
- It’s a good idea to put a stitch marker (sm) into the first and/or last st of each row if you want to keep track of those.
Finished Size
The finished washcloth measures approximately 8″ square as written.

Using your Crochet Washcloth
Now it is time to enjoy using your beautiful washcloths! They are sturdy enough for frequent use, and will also look lovely hanging on a peg in your bath.
