How to Knit a Scarf with Jumbo Yarn {SO quick!}

If you are looking for a QUICK knitting pattern using jumbo yarn, give this Big Knit Scarf pattern a try. Introducing…. the “Misty Cloud Scarf“! The bulky scarf is quite unique in that it uses just one skein and each row has only 5 stitches! The pattern uses Bernat Blanket Big yarn (size 7 Jumbo), which makes you feel like you are snuggled into a cozy chenille blanket while making a fashion statement.

Although the pattern includes both increase and decrease stitches, this quick knit scarf pattern may be a good choice for a beginner knitter attempting to learn those skills. Since there are only 5 stitches per row, it is easy to fix errors and start over! Plus, the scarf only takes UNDER ONE HOUR to finish!

Knit Scarf Pattern Jumbo Yarn

The jumbo scarf knitting pattern is easy to work once you master a repeat of 8 rows. These 8 rows contain stitches for increases & decreases that create the interesting texture. Don’t worry – the increases and decreases cancel each other out so that you will always have the same amount of stitches per row: 5.

You will simply repeat the 8-row pattern many times until you reach the end of your skein of yarn. Lastly, add pom-poms for a modern look! The misty gray color of this Bernat Blanket Big yarn is one of my favorites, and is perfect for a cozy winter feeling.

You will need the following supplies to make the jumbo scarf:

BIG KNIT Scarf Pattern

Gauge: 4″ (10cm) square = approx. 2.5 sts by 3.3 rows (in pattern)

How many stitches do you need for a big scarf?

Follow instructions as follows – you will only need 5 stitches for this jumbo scarf!

Beginning with the Size 50 knitting needles, cast on 5 stitches with your Jumbo yarn.

Knit Scarf Pattern

Rows 1 – 3: Purl.

Row 4 (RS): K1, *yo, skp; rep from * to end.

Rows 5-7: Purl

Row 8: K1, *yo, k2tog; rep from * to end.

Rep Rows 1-8 until you have just enough yarn to bind off.

Finishing the Scarf

Bind off (purlwise if you are on a purl row, knitwise if you are on row 4 or 8).

For reference, I worked the 8-row pattern 6 times and had enough yarn for 5 more rows in the pattern before binding off purlwise. That added up to 53 rows total.

Weave in all loose ends. You can use your fingers to weave in the jumbo yarn, or trim and sew it in.

That’s it! This scarf may only take you 45 minutes or so to complete.

Important Tips for Knitting your scarf

Some things to keep in mind as you knit the scarf are:

  • The Right Side (RS) is always facing you as you work even rows, while the Wrong Side (WS) faces you as you work odd rows.
  • Try to count your stitches after Rows 4 and 8 in the pattern to ensure you didn’t lose or add a stitch.  You should always have 5 sts per row.
  • If you have another skein of jumbo yarn, feel free to make the scarf longer to suit your preferred length.

Block your Scarf

You can choose to block your scarf to stretch it out a bit, but I didn’t bother.  You can wet block it by pinning the scarf flat to a towel or mat, then spraying it lightly with water.  Next, allow the scarf to dry before unpinning.

Optional – Add pom-poms to short ends

You can choose to leave your scarf as is if you don’t want the optional pom-poms.

Alternatively, you can add the fluffy pom-poms to the short ends for added effect and weight.  Follow these steps:

  • gather some yards of Super Bulky yarn, such as Lion Bran Wool Ease Thick & Quick
  • use a pom-pom maker to create 6-8 pom-poms that are approx. 3″ diameter (or make them yourself without a tool)
  • tie these pom-poms to the short ends of the scarf, 3-4 on each end:

Finished Size

The finished jumbo scarf (without pom-poms) measures approximately 65″ length by 8″ wide.  The pom-poms add about 3” to each short side.

Wearing your Big Knit Scarf

Now it is time to enjoy wearing your finished knit scarf! It’s cozy enough for a chilly day, and the misty gray color will look gorgeous with a light-colored coat or sweater. Simply wrap the scarf around both your shoulders, or toss one end over one shoulder:

It looks pretty from the back, too!

You could also wrap the scarf around your neck for a BIG cowl.

Get ready for the compliments on your BIG stitches. As they say…. go BIG or go home!

What do you think of this one skein knit scarf pattern? Are you intimidated to try it if you are a beginner? Don’t be!

Once you get the hang of rows 1-8, the project will become repetitive and simple.  I know you can handle the increase (YO) & decrease (SKP) stitches if you are a beginner.  This is a great project to practice those skills on.  Just remember to count stitches on your needle after finishing a Row 4 or Row 8.
