Bookmark Crochet Pattern
How to crochet a bookmark
It is very easy to crochet a bookmark using basic stitches and simple techniques, making this easy pattern a great beginner project.
Here I will walk you through the simple crochet pattern to make a book-shaped bookmark. You will be mainly using single crochet stitches.
Gauge: gauge is not critical.
NOTE –
- Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
Simple Bookmark Crochet Pattern
Using size H/8 crochet hook, ch 7 with yarn.
Row 1 (WS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (6 sts throughout)
Rows 2-5: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.
The next row creates the ‘binding’ of the book.
Row 6 (RS): Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st across. Turn.
Rows 7-10: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.
Do not turn after Row 10.
Sl st into 5 row edges. (stop at ‘binding’ row)
Chain for 10-12″ or until desired length of bookmark.
Fasten off.
Weave in loose ends.
Cut a small piece of cardboard (ideally from a packaging box) to fit inside crochet rectangle.
Hot glue the cardboard to the WS of the crochet ‘book’ rectangle. This creates the ‘pages’ inside the book.
Fold the book and hot glue cardboard ‘pages’ together to keep it closed.
Add Tassel to Bookmark
Add a small tassel to the other end of the bookmark as follows:
- Make one yarn tassel (approximately 4” length) with the same yarn you used for the bookmark, then attach it to the last chain.
- I have a tutorial on how to make tassels in THIS BLOG POST FOR A CABLE SCARF. You can follow the same directions, except use light weight (3) yarn and wrap the yarn around a cardboard that is about 4” wide.
- Before attaching the tassel to the last chain, feel free to add a tiny wood bead first.
Important Tips for Crocheting your Bookmarks
Some things to keep in mind as you work the bookmark crochet pattern are:
- Thick cardboard from a packaging box works best for the book ‘pages’.
- Gauge is not critical, as the small book can be any size.
Finished Size
The finished bookmark measures approximately 10-12″ length, and 14-16″ length with a tassel.
