Yarn Recommendations for Hanging Baskets

The yarn you choose makes a bigger difference for baskets than almost any other crochet project. Since a hanging basket needs to hold its shape and often hold actual weight, you want a fiber that’s sturdy, not stretchy. Here’s what works best as chunky yarn for baskets:

The Best Fiber Choices

Cotton yarn is the top pick for most crochet baskets. It’s strong, holds its structure beautifully, and comes in a huge range of colors. Look for 100% cotton or a cotton-blend for the best results. I love using the Lion Brand Mac-re-Me yarn because it is recycled cotton!

Thick Jute or natural twine gives your basket a rustic, organic look that’s especially stunning for plant hangers. It’s extremely sturdy and pairs beautifully with trailing houseplants. Keep in mind jute can be a bit rough on the hands while crocheting, so it may not be the best choice for sensitive skin.

Cotton ribbon yarn or t-shirt yarn creates a chunkier, more modern look and works up very quickly. It’s a great option if you want a statement piece.

Yarn to Avoid

Steer clear of 100% acrylic on its own for this project. It has too much stretch and your basket will sag over time, especially when loaded with plants or storage items. If you love your acrylic stash yarn, try holding two strands together for extra stability, or choose an acrylic-cotton blend.

Free Crochet Hanging Basket Pattern Instructions

NOTES –

First you will work in several rows to form a square. Next, you will create a hanging loop at the corner where you finished the square. Next you will fold together 3 corners of the square toward the WS to form the “pocket” of the basket. Lastly, you will seam together those folded corners to close up the basket.

Follow the instructions below in the order indicated.

NOTE – Ch 1 does not count as a st.

Square Piece for Basket

Using size P crochet hook, ch 22 with size 6 yarn.

Stitch count (from 1st row) remains the same throughout square.

NOTE – It may be difficult to find the top stitches to work for Row 3 in the pattern, since the Row 2 sl sts may slant toward the WS.

It will help to use stitch markers to mark the 1st stitch in each row.

Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. 20 sts

Row 2: Ch 1, sl st in each st across. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, hdc in BLO of each st across. Turn.

Row 4: Rep Row 2.

Rep Rows 3-4 seven more times or until you form a square piece.

Next, ch 8 sts to create a hook, then sl st the last ch to the last st of your row to form a loop at the corner.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Block the piece evenly into a square shape: 9.5″ square

FOLD AND SEAM:

Form the basket as follows:

  • Begin laying the piece RS down in a diamond shape, ensuring the corner with a loop is at the top.
  • Next, fold the bottom corner of the square (opposite the loop) toward the WS.
  • Likewise, fold the two side corners of the square toward the WS to form the pocket of the basket.
  • Use a tapestry needle & lighter weight yarn in a similar color to seam the basket together in front, along where these 3 corners meet.

Fasten off.

Weave in ends to the WS (inside of basket).

Important Tips for Crocheting Your Basket

Some things to keep in mind as you work the storage basket crochet pattern are:

  • Use a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch in each row.
  • The Right Side (RS) will face you as you work odd-numbered rows.
  • Note how stitching into the back loop (BLO) forms prominent ridges for the Right Side.
  • It is a good idea to use lighter weight yarn in a similar color to work the seaming, since the size 6 yarn can make a bulky seam.

Creative Ways to Use Your Crochet Hanging Basket

One of the best things about this pattern is how many ways you can put it to work around your home. Once you make your first basket, you’ll start seeing empty wall hooks and doorknobs everywhere as opportunities. Here are some ideas to get you inspired for handmade home organization:

For Plant Lovers

  • Hang a trailing pothos or ivy near a sunny window for an instant boho vibe
  • Tuck a small succulent or air plant inside the crochet planter for a low-maintenance living display
  • Use it as a decorative pot cover to set your plastic nursery pot inside
  • Create a vertical garden by hanging several baskets at different heights on a wall or fence

For Home Organization

  • Mount one near the front door to corral keys, sunglasses, dog leashes, or mail
  • Hang one in the bathroom to store rolled hand towels, soaps, or small toiletries
  • Put it in the kitchen for small items – it’s great for freeing up counter space
  • Add one to a child’s room for small stuffed animals, hair accessories, or toys
  • Keep one in your craft room to hold yarn, scissors, or project supplies within easy reach

For Style & Décor

  • Group three baskets at varying heights on a gallery wall for a bohemian statement
  • Hang one in a reading nook with a small (battery) candle or decorative object inside
  • Try seasonal fillings such as pinecones and dried oranges in winter or flowers and seashells in summer to update your décor without buying anything new
  • Give it as a housewarming gift, already styled with a small plant or bath goodies inside

The beauty of a neutral or natural-toned basket is that it fits almost any decorating style, from modern farmhouse to maximalist boho. And because the pattern is so quick to make, creating a coordinated set in different sizes or colors is very doable (see the ad-free crochet pattern which also includes the Large basket size).

Tips for Hanging Your Crochet Basket

Getting the hang (pun intended) of displaying your basket well makes all the difference between a project that looks polished and one that just droops on the wall. Here are a few tips to help you hang yours with confidence:

Choose the Right Wall Hook

Look for S-hooks, cup hooks, or adhesive Command hooks rated for the weight you plan to hang. For a basket holding a small potted plant, you’ll want a hook rated for at least a few pounds. For lightweight storage or décor, almost any hook will do.

No Holes in the Wall? No Problem.

Adhesive Command hooks are a game-changer for renters or anyone who’d rather not put extra holes in their walls. The larger sizes hold several pounds and remove cleanly. Over-the-door hooks and curtain rod hooks are also great zero-damage options.

Think About Placement

For plants, hang your basket near a light source appropriate for your plant’s needs. Most trailing houseplants love bright, indirect light near a window. For storage baskets, hang at a height that’s easy to reach but still looks intentional, such as at shoulder height or just above.

Keep It Level

If you’re hanging multiple baskets in a row or grouping, use a level or the measuring lines on painter’s tape to make sure your hooks are evenly spaced before you commit. A quick measure saves you having to readjust later.

Weight Considerations

Crochet baskets made with cotton or jute are surprisingly sturdy, but they do have limits. You may want to avoid putting heavier items like books or large pots inside. Always err on the side of a sturdier hanging method when in doubt.

Style Your Basket Before You Hang It

It sounds obvious, but placing your basket on a table first and styling what goes inside makes it much easier to visualize than trying to do it all one-handed while it’s already on the wall. For instance, adjust the drape of a plant or fluff the position of stored items before you hang!

FAQ

What yarn is best for a crochet hanging basket?

Cotton, jute, and cotton-blend yarns are ideal because they’re sturdy and hold their shape well. Avoid stretchy yarns like acrylic on its own, as the basket can sag, especially when holding plants or heavier items.

Is this pattern beginner-friendly?

Yes! This pattern uses basic stitches – slip stitch & half double crochet – and works in rows. If you know how to work in rows & seam, you have everything you need to complete it.

Can I use this basket for a real plant?

Absolutely. This basket works great as a plant holder. For potted plants, simply set the small pot inside (no need to worry about water drainage). If you’d like to use it as a direct planter, consider adding a liner.

How do I hang the basket?

The pattern includes a hanging loop at the top. Simply slip it over a wall hook, a curtain rod, a ceiling hook, or even a cabinet knob. Command hooks work great if you don’t want to put holes in your walls.

Can I make this bigger or smaller?

Yes! You can adjust the size by increasing or decreasing the number of stitches and rows. See the ad-free pattern for specific instructions on both Small (x) and Large (x) sizes.
