Recently I began naming my crochet and knit patterns after local New England places of interest.

This “Newbury Basket” is named after the picturesque town of Newbury, MA. It is a quiet, rural town north of Boston with beautiful old farmhouses. I can imagine a handmade basket enduring in these type of homes. Their simplicity and texture are timeless.

Important Tips for Crocheting your own basket

Some things to keep in mind as you crochet the basket are:

  • Try to count sts after each increase round of the baskets to make sure the stitch count matches the pattern. Use a stitch marker (sm) to mark the top of the ch-2 in each round.
  • The Right Side (RS) of the baskets always faces you when working.
  • The finished decorative edging is optional. If you want to leave it out, just skip the last round.
  • Feel free to adjust the height of the basket by repeating Round 9 until desired height.

Finished Size

The finished SMALL sized basket measures approximately 5″ diameter and 17″ circumference as written.
