Crochet Trees

The idea behind a flat crochet Christmas tree pattern is to design a tree shape with BASIC CROCHET STITCHES, working from the top down or bottom up. Each ’row’ forms branches of the tree. The tree trunk is usually made by joining new yarn and rows to the bottom of the tree. Once finished, the little trees can be embellished with ‘ornaments’, such as wood stars or beads.

The following is a list of supplies you would need to create one small tree just like mine. Feel free to use similar yarn (size 4, worsted weight yarn) and similar size crochet hook to make your own. This is a great way to use up scrap yarn. You can make many of these crochet Christmas tree ornaments in no time at all!

Important Tips for Crocheting your Christmas Trees

Some things to keep in mind as you work the tree crochet pattern are:

  • The Right Side (RS) of each tree ornament is worked on odd-numbered rows.
  • Feel free to experiment with different combination of colors for the trees. This project is a great way to use up scrap yarn in your stash!
  • Use different sized yarn or hooks to vary the size of the trees.
  • If you want taller trees, feel free to continue repeating Rows 5-6 in pattern. Just make sure to finish last row as Row 5, then add the tree trunk in the center of the base of the tree.

Finished Size

The finished tree measures approximately 4.5″ length by 3.5″ at widest point. Feel free to block the tree if you wish, but it is not necessary.

Crochet Christmas Ornaments

The miniature trees make great crochet ornaments. Just loop some yarn through the top of the tree, and hang it on your large Christmas tree. Feel free to embellish your ornaments with tiny wood stars, beads, or garlands. Make them unique and interesting.

Crochet Christmas Tree Garland

Make a bunch of these little Christmas trees and string them together with one long piece of yarn to make a Christmas garland. They will spruce up your fireplace mantel during the Christmas season.

Just cut one long piece of yarn (about six feet), then thread it through the backs of the Christmas trees. Space the trees apart evenly, then hang your garland to add festive cheer!

These sweet little trees would also look perfect tied to the top of a gift. The recipient will enjoy both the gift and the extra touch of this ornament.
