How do you make an easy crochet scarf with variegated yarn?

The textured scarf is straightforward to crochet once you get the hang of the combined stitches.  The sc, hdc, and dc are all worked into one stitch to create the texture. The Lion Brand Scarfie yarn is the perfect choice to create color waves in the texture. Additionally, the pattern shows how to add 10 tassels to the short edges.

You will need the following supplies to make the variegated textured scarf:

Supplies

  • One skein (312 yds) of Lion Brand Scarfie size 5 Bulky yarn. I used the ombre colors “Cream/Silver”.
  • size K-10 crochet hook (6.50 mm)
  • scissors, tapestry needle to weave in ends and add tassels
  • optional – about 100 yards of complimentary size 4 yarn for tassels.  I used Red Heart “with love” in color Eggshell.

Notes:

You will be crocheting the ombre scarf as a long rectangle, then you can optionally add tassels to the short edges.

SIZE: The finished scarf measures about 9.5” width by 44” length without tassels.  The tassels measure about 7-8” long.

You can expect the rectangle portion of the scarf to take a bit over 4 hours to crochet.  It is a great idea to time yourself crocheting 5 rows and estimate your finished time from there.

Scarf Rectangle:

(note – the pdf pattern contains step-by-step photos of the stitches in Row 2)

Fasten off.

Weave in all loose ends.

Optional – add tassels to scarf edges:

If you would like to spruce up the scarf with tassels, they are easy to make and attach to the scarf.

Simply make ten yarn tassels (approximately 7-8” tall) with complimentary yarn.  I have a tutorial on how to make tassels in THIS BLOG POST FOR A CABLE SCARF.  You can follow the same directions except use medium size 4 yarn and wrap around the cardboard 20 times.

Next, attach two of them to the two corners on one short end of the scarf.  Add a third tassel centered in between these two:

Lastly, add two more tassels centered between these.

Repeat for the other short end of the scarf, then trim all ends evenly:

10 tassels added.  You are finished!

Wearing Your Textured Scarf

There are several ways you can wear the variegated textured scarf.

Simply drape the tassel crochet scarf over your arms and shoulders like a wrap:

Another option is to toss one end over your shoulder:

You could wrap the scarf as a cowl, and leave both ends in front:

The back of the scarf looks pretty, too, as the ombre color pattern is showcased:

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial on how to crochet a scarf.  Once you get the hang of Row 2, the project will become repetitive and simple.  I found it to be an easy project to bring along on-the-go.
