How to Crochet a Long Scarf

What is the best choice for yarn?

For this Crochet Long Scarf Pattern Free, you want a color changing yarn to add interest (since the scarf is SO long). An Ombre color-changing yarn is a wonderful choice.

Can a beginner crochet this scarf?

Yes! Especially with a repetitive easy stitch pattern using basic crochet stitches and simple techniques! The Crochet Stitches For Scarf mainly use the dc stitch.

Here I will walk you through each step of making this modern fall and winter crochet scarf, using your favorite yarn color combination.

Finished Measurements:

  • 10″ width by 70″ length
  • Measurements are for finished scarf without fringe, fringe adds about 12″ total to length

Gauge: 4″ (10cm) square = 11 sts by 8 rows

Gauge is not too critical.

First, you will crochet the scarf in one long rectangle using the stitch pattern. Next, you can optionally block the scarf to even out the edges. Next, you will cut yarn to create fringe pieces for each short edge of scarf. Lastly, you will add the fringe pieces to each short edge of the scarf.

NOTE –

  • Ch 3 counts as 1 dc.
  • Stitch pattern is reversible.
  • Use a stitch marker (sm) to keep track of first st (tch) in each row.

Add optional fringe to short edges of scarf as follows:

  • Cut 56 strands of 14” yarn (it’s quicker to do this by wrapping yarn around 7” width thin piece of cardboard 28 times for each short edge, then cut the bottom yarn)
  • Fold one strand in half, forming a loop
  • Use crochet hook to loop each piece through each st at both short edges of the scarf
  • Follow THIS TUTORIAL for visual instructions on adding fringe
  • Lastly, trim ends to even out the fringe (to approx 6″)

Important Tips for Crocheting your Scarf

  • Some things to keep in mind as you work the crochet scarf pattern are:
  • It is helpful to use a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch in each row (top of tch).
  • If the color change in the ombre yarn is very striking, feel free to cut yarn & join the new color to the beginning of a new row.
  • Feel free to customize the scarf as follows:
    • work more/less rows if you would like the scarf longer/shorter
    • be sure to have enough yarn for these customizations
    • add tassels instead of fringe to short edges
