How to Add Tassels to a Blanket (SO easy!)
Cozy blanket season is coming up. Who doesn’t love cuddling up on the couch with a warm throw, cup of coffee, and an intriguing book or movie? Does everyone in your home have their own favorite blanket? It is time you made yours extra cute. Today I’m going to show you how to add tassels to a blanket. Blanket tassels are all the rage and instantly update a throw’s cozy and stylish factors. The best part of this project is that you can upcycle a throw blanket that you already own. Just grab some yarn!
If you already have a favorite toasty throw blanket on hand, this project will be super simple. But if you don’t already own a knit or crochet blanket, now is the time to invest in a warm one. I’ve got some great options listed below.

DIY Tassel Throw Blanket
To jazz up your cozy blanket with tassels, you will need the following supplies:
Supplies for Tassels
- cozy throw blanket (knitted or crocheted are best, such as my CHUNKY KNIT THROW) or perhaps a choice from the throw blankets listed below. (Click the photos to view)
- coordinating yarn in size Super Bulky (6). (10-20 yards should make about 6-8 tassels). I used LION BRAND’S WOOL-EASE THICK & QUICK in color FISHERMAN.
- yarn needle, scissors
- small piece of cardboard about 5.5″ wide
How to Make Tassels
The first step you want to take is to determine how many tassels you would like for your throw blanket. It is best to choose an odd number for each short side of your blanket: ONE for each corner, ONE centered between the corners, and any additional tassels centered within those spots.
I chose to make only 3 tassels for each of the short sides of my blanket (6 total).
Cut a small piece of cardboard to about 5.5″ wide.
Lay your yarn across the 5.5″ width, with the yarn end at the bottom.
Wrap this yarn around the cardboard piece about 20 times. Feel free to wrap more or less times depending on the size tassel you would like. (Wrapping more will give you a bigger tassel.)
Cut the end of the yarn at the same bottom edge of the cardboard (where the original end began).
Next, tie a 16″ piece of yarn under and around the top of of the wrapped yarn. Tie in a double knot to tighten:
Cut the bottom ends of the yarn to remove from the cardboard piece:
Repeat the above steps for the number of tassels you plan to make.
How to Attach Tassels to Blanket
Next you will need to attach each tassel to the throw blanket.
Thread the yarn needle through the yarn you used to tie the top of the tassel.
Starting with one of the corners, thread this yarn through the corner of the blanket.
Tie the yarn (tightly with double knot) to attach the tassel to the corner of the blanket. Blend the tied ends in with the rest of the tassel pieces.
Starting about 1.5″ down from the top of the tassel, tie a 12″ piece of yarn around the loose yarn strings. Again, tie tightly with a double knot. This forms the ‘head’ of the tassel.
Lastly, trim the ends of your tassel for an even look.
Repeat the above steps for the other corner of your blanket’s short edge, then again at the center of the short edge.
Attach any additional tassels centered between these tassels.
Repeat the steps above to add tassels to the other short edge of your throw blanket.
Cozy up with your DIY tassel blanket!
It’s time to rest after that fun project – you earned the feet-up time! Grab your tassel throw and sit back for your favorite binge-watching session.
When not in use, drape your pretty throw across a chair or sofa for all the world to see your tassel handiwork.
Now that you know how to make tassels for a throw, how many blankets will your transform? You could even add tassels with contrasting yarn colors. But be warned – tassels are addictive…your family may pester you to update their favorite throws. Even your dog or cat may get in on the action. (Cats, especially, are likely to obsess over your tassels).
In addition to throw blankets, you can add tassels to a FARMHOUSE STYLE WOOD BEAD GARLAND or a FARMHOUSE STYLE PILLOW.
Tassels are also fun to add to handmade wearables. I added big tassels to THIS CABLE KNIT SCARF and THIS SPRING/SUMMER SHAWL. The yarn tassels gave these accessories a modern look and were so easy to add:

No matter if you update an existing blanket with these fabulous tassels or if you end up purchasing a pre-made tassel throw, I hope you find time to snuggle up with your favorite peeps, pets, and pajamas. Tis the season for coziness!
