Farmhouse Tassel Pillow Covers

Progress is slow on our kitchen renovation but that hasn’t stopped me from planning ahead. This week I sewed two farmhouse style tassel pillow covers. The pillows will be perfect for the benches in our new banquette seating area. I’m getting excited to enjoy my first hot cup of tea in that cozy banquette some day soon.

I only needed one yard of 54″ fabric to make both of these pillow covers, so this project is right in line with my One Yard Wonder series of posts. You’ll find other simple sewing projects there, too!

Supplies

I gathered the following supplies to make these easy tassel pillow covers. Most of them were items I already owned, so it didn’t take too long to get started. You may have a yard of fabric in your own stash, as well as pillow forms that need new covers.

  • Two 18″ pillow forms. You can find similar ones here.
  • Approx. 100 yds of Super Chunky Yarn of your choice for the tassels. I used Buttercream Alpaca Solid yarn in the color Cream. You can find similar Lion Brand yarn here.
  • 5″ wide piece of scrap cardboard
  • sewing scissors, thread, sewing machine, sewing needle, measuring tape, pins, iron

Farmhouse Tassel Pillow Covers – Steps

Cut out fabric

You will be making two pillow covers for your two 18″ square pillow forms. The 54″ yard of fabric should be cut as follows for each pillow cover:

  • cut 1 piece that is 19″ square (this will be the front of your pillow cover)
  • cut 2 pieces that are 19″ x 13 1/2″

Sew pillow covers

For each pillow cover, take the 2 pieces that are 19″ x 13 1/2″ and press the long edge in 1/4″ toward the wrong side, then another 1/4″ with an iron. We will be using these two pieces to make an envelope closure on the back of the pillow cover. Each piece should look as follows:

Sew up this pressed hem about 1/4″ in for each envelope piece.

Next, pin these two hemmed pieces to the one 19″ square fabric piece, right sides together and overlapping. If you’re using striped fabric like I did, make sure the stripes are going the same direction for all pieces.

Also, make sure the hemmed edges are in the middle, and the raw edges are at the pillow edge:

Sew a 1/2″ seam along the outer edge of the entire pillow. Trim corners.

Remove pins, turn right side out, and press seams. The pillow cover is complete, so now you can make the 4 tassels that will be attached to each corner.

Make Yarn Tassels

Starting with the end of your yarn at the bottom of your 5″ cardboard piece, start wrapping the yarn around the 5″ of cardboard 30 times. Trim the last wrapped yarn piece at the bottom of the cardboard:

Tuck a string of yarn under the top of the wrapped yarn and tie a knot there:

Cut the yarn across the bottom of the cardboard and then tighten the top knot:

Remove the tassel from the cardboard, then secure a string of yarn around the middle of the tassel, closer to the top. Tie it very tightly:

Once you have 4 of these tassels made, secure them tightly to each corner of your pillow cover by hand-sewing them on. Sew under and around the top knot of the tassel. Feel free to tuck in and trim any loose yarn pieces.

Repeat the same steps for your second pillow, and you’re finished! Simply slide in the pillow forms into the envelope closure on the back of each pillow cover.

I started to set up our new benches and cushions in the banquette area of our kitchen. I couldn’t help myself, even though the window wall still needs shiplap and paint, and we don’t have our kitchen table yet. Not to mention all the trim needs painting. Please excuse the unfinished look of it. Click here if you want to see the original design plan. (UPDATE – click here to see the finished kitchen!)

This view will give you an idea of how the space will look in the near future. These new black benches are from Wayfair and the blue tufted seat cushions are from Pier 1.

Susan, Enjoyed reading about Farmhouse Tassel pillow covers. I sew a little, and these pillow covers look easy to make–your instructions are very clear.
I think Magnolia Home Fashion’s Tybee upholstery fabric (denim) is great for Farmhouse style. To think, 1 yard of 54″ fabric to cover two pillows–is a deal! Like the color/thickness of yarn you used for 4 tassels.
Banquette area looks grand. Love the black benches which match kitchen floor; along w/ blue colored tufted seat cushions…where soon….you’ll sit to enjoy cup of hot TEA.
