Gauge: one square = 5.5″ (not critical)

How to crochet a granny square wall hanging

This wall hanging works up simply to form a small square. It is the perfect size for a nursery, office, or bath wall decor.

NOTES: The wall hanging will be worked flat in rounds. You will attach the finished square piece to a wooden dowel and add tassels to the bottom.

Instructions to make the crochet granny square are as follows…

Granny Square Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern

Follow the instructions below in the order indicated.

First determine which color(s) you wish to use for color A, B, and C.
“Break color A, B, or C” means you will fasten off that particular yarn color and cut a tail.

Foundation Ring: Using size J crochet hook, ch 4 with color A and join with sl st to first ch to form a ring. (Alternatively, you can start with a Magic Circle, aka Magic Ring).

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), work 7 hdc into ring, join with sl st to 2nd ch of first ch-2. Break color A. (8 sts)

Round 2: Join color B to any st, ch 2, hdc in same st, ch 2, sk next st, [2 hdc in next st, ch 2, sk next st] three times, join with sl st to 2nd ch of first ch-2. Break color B. (16 sts)

Round 3: Join color C to any ch-2 sp, ch 3, [1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in same sp to make a corner, ch 2, *[2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in next ch-2 sp to make a corner, ch 2; rep from * two more times, join with sl st to 3rd ch of first ch-3. (32 sts)

Round 4: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in next dc, *[2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in next corner ch-2 sp, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc sts, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, **1 dc in each of next 2 dc sts; rep from * three more times, ending last rep at **, join with sl st to 3rd ch of first ch-3. Break color C. (48 sts)

Round 5: Join color A to any corner ch-2 sp, *3 sc in corner, sc in each of next 10 dc sts across side; rep from * three more times, join with sl st to first sc. Break color A. (52 sts)

Finishing Crochet Wall Hanging

Fasten off.

Weave in ends to WS.

Block square if desired. It should measure approx 5.5″ square.

ATTACH TO DOWEL:

With RS facing, use any color yarn and a tapestry needle to join the square to the wood dowel in 4 evenly-spaced places:

weave yarn through a sc st,
then around wood dowel two times at that place.

When finished weaving at end of the dowel, cut a 16″ tail of the yarn for hanging the piece. Attach the other end of the yarn tail to the opposite end of the dowel. (Tie a knot at top of hanging yarn to center it if desired).

ADDING TASSELS:

Make 3 tassels as follows:

Begin by wrapping your Bulky yarn (in chosen color) around a 4” wide piece of cardboard, 10 times.
Tie the top of the wrapped yarn together with an 8″ piece of yarn, then cut the bottom yarn from the cardboard.
Using a tapestry needle, attach the tassel to one bottom corner of the wall hanging, threading the yarn from front to back.
Cut an 8” piece of yarn and use it to tie the ‘head’ of the tassel together.
Lastly, trim the tassel ends to even them out.
Repeat the above steps to make 2 more tassels and attach them to the opposite bottom corner and the bottom center of wall hanging.
