FREE CROCHET BANDANA PATTERN

The idea behind a crochet bandana pattern is to create one triangle using BASIC CROCHET STITCHES, working in rows as well as a finishing round. You will be crocheting the bandana in rows top down to form the main triangle of the bandana, then working in a round and extra row to add the decorative edging and ties.

The following is a list of supplies you would need to create one crochet kerchief. Feel free to use similar cotton yarn (size 4, medium yarn) and the same size crochet hook to make your own. This is a great way to use up scrap yarn. The easy crochet bandana pattern shouldn’t take took long – less than 2 hours total – so it’s a terrific afternoon easy project!

Especially with the repetitive double crochet stitch pattern using basic stitches and simple techniques!

Here I will walk you through each step of making a simple bandana, using your favorite yarn. You will be using an easy double crochet stitch pattern, increasing every row in a triangle shape.

You will be crocheting the bandana top down in increasing rows to form a triangle. Then you will add decorative edging & ties to the bandana.

Gauge: 4″ (10cm) square = 11 sts by 7 rows (in double crochet stitch pattern repeat).

The resulting simple kerchief triangle will be 22″ width by 13″ length as written. (The ties are each 8″)

NOTE –

  • First Ch 3 counts as one dc st throughout pattern (tch).
  • You can place a sm in top of tch of every row to keep track of first st.
  • Ch-2 space (sp) does not count as sts.
  • Ch 1 does not count as a st.
  • You will be adding 6 sts per row (3 sts per side of ‘triangle’).

Bandana Crochet Pattern

Using size H/8 crochet hook, chain 4 sts with size 4 cotton yarn.

You will be forming a larger triangle with each row.

Triangle:

Row 1: Work (1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in 4th ch from hook . Turn. (4 sts)

Row 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st, dc in next dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, 2 dc in tch. Turn. (10 sts)

Row 3: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st, dc in each st across until ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc in each st across until tch, 2 dc in tch. Turn. (16 sts)

Rows 4-15: Rep Row 3. (st count will increase by 6 per row, not including the ch-2 sp)

At end of Row 15, DO NOT TURN.

You will work along the longest edge (base) of the triangle next.

(You should have 88 sts in Row 15 – 44 sts per side of triangle).

Next, beginning with the longest edge, you will be working in one round to form a border around the bandana.

Tips for next steps –

  • Place sm in first st of the round.

Border:

Round 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in next st at corner, then:

  • work 2 sc sts in each row edge sp along longest edge of triangle for 60 sts,
  • work 2 sc in next corner,
  • work 1 sc st in each dc of Row 15 and work 3 sc in ch-2 sp at point of triangle,

Join with sl st to first st in round. (155 sts)

TURN.

Next you will be working in one row along the two shorter sides of the triangle to add decorative edging and two ties.

Decorative Edging and Ties:

Row 1: Ch sts until reach 8″, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch back to corner (one tie made), *ch 2, sk next st, sc in next st; rep from * for an even number of sts along two sides of triangle until reach opposite corner, ch sts until reach 8″, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch back to corner (2nd tie made).

Fasten off.

Important Tips for Crocheting your Kerchief

Some things to keep in mind as you work the bandana crochet pattern are:

  • The stitch pattern is reversible, so you can choose which side is your RS.
  • It’s a good idea to use a stitch marker (sm) to keep track of the first st in each row (top of the turning chain).
  • It’s a good idea to use a stitch marker (sm) to keep track of the first st in the single crochet border round.
  • It may help to block the bandana to its’ final size before wearing, but it is not necessary.

Finished Size

The finished item measures approximately 22″ width by 13” length, which should easily fit a teen or woman’s head size.
