Easy Crochet Soap Saver Pattern

How to Make a Crochet Soap Saver

The idea behind this soap saver coaster pattern is to work in rounds with BASIC CROCHET STITCHES. Rather than working in rows, you work in rounds from the center outward. This forms a circle to create the base of the soap bag. Then you continue working in rounds for the same # of stitches to form the sides of the bag.

The following is a list of supplies you would need to create one crochet soap saver. Feel free to use similar yarn (size 5, bulky yarn) and the same size crochet hook to make your own. These bags are great crochet stash buster projects. You can make a soap sack in just minutes!

Supplies

  • Size J (6mm) hook size
  • 1 skein of Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn (317 yds per skein) can make many soap bags (or similar size 5 weight yarn). You just need 45 yards per bag.
    • Color: Steel Blue or Cream
    • (note – the best yarn to use for these bags is cotton or cotton blend yarn)
  • scissors
  • tapestry needle (aka yarn needle)
  • Stitch Marker
  • optional 0.5″ diameter wood beads for tie

Soap Saver Crochet Pattern

How to crochet a soap bag

It is very easy to crochet a soap sack using basic stitches and simple techniques, making this easy pattern a great beginner project.

Here I will walk you through the simple crochet pattern to make a textured cotton soap saver bag. You will be mainly using half double crochet stitches worked into the back loop.

Gauge: gauge is not critical.

NOTE –

  • The soap bag will be worked from the bottom to top in continuous rounds, increasing stitches in initial rounds for the base.
  • It is helpful to use a stitch marker to keep track of the first st in each round.
  • The RS faces you as you work. You will not be turning your work.
  • Ch 2 counts as 1st hdc st throughout.

Foundation Ring: Using size J crochet hook, ch 4 with yarn and join with sl st to first ch to form a ring. (Alternatively, you can start with a Magic Circle, aka Magic Ring).

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), work 7 hdc into ring. Join with sl st to 1st st (top of ch 2). (8 sts)

Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), work 1 hdc in BLO in same place (1st st), work [2 hdc in BLO] in next and each st around. Join with sl st to first st (top of ch 2). (16 sts)

Round 3: Rep Round 2. (32 sts)

Round 4: Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), work 1 hdc in BLO in each st around. Join with sl st to first st (top of ch 2). (32 sts)

Rounds 5-11: Rep Round 4. (32 sts)

Add a scalloped edge around the top of your sack as follows:

Scalloped Edge:

(Tip – place sm in first st of rounds)

Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), work sc stitches evenly around each st at top of sack, ensuring total stitch count is 32. Join with sl st to first sc st.

Round 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in 1st st, *Ch 4, sk next 3 sts, sc in next st; rep from * around. After last ch 4, sk last 3 sts and join with sl st to first sc st.
