EASY CROCHET CLUTCH PURSE PATTERN

Gauge: 4″ (10cm) square = 10.5 sts by 6.5 rows (in pattern). NOTE – gauge is not too critical.

NOTES: You will be crocheting clutch purse in straight rows, increasing in a triangular shape for the purse flap at the beginning. Next, you will work the same number of sts in rows for the rectangular shape. Lastly, you will seam the sides together and add a button for enclosure.

Instructions are as follows…

Crochet Clutch Pattern

Beginning with the Size J (6mm) hook, chain 4 stitches with your BULKY COTTON CORD YARN.

NOTE – each ch 3 counts as 1 dc st. Ch-2 space does not count as sts. You will be adding 8 sts per row (4 sts per side of ‘triangle’).

Top Flap of Clutch Purse

Row 1: In 4th ch from hook (2dc, ch 2, 3 dc). Turn. (6 sts)

Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, dc in each st across until ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc in each st across until tch, 3 dc in tch. Turn. (14 sts)

Row 3 (RS): Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, dc in BLO of each st across until ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc in BLO of each st across until tch, 3 dc in tch. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, dc in FLO of each st across until ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc in FLO of each st across until tch, 3 dc in tch. Turn.

Rows 5-6: Rep Rows 3-4.

The next round will form a sc border around the flap:

Round 7: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st, sc in BLO of each st across until ch-2 sp, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in ch-2 sp, sc in BLO of each st across until tch, 3 sc in tch. DO NOT TURN. Sc evenly across the flat long edge of the triangle for 27 sts total. Sl st to first sc to join.

Make sure you have 27 sts total across the long edge of triangle.

Next, you will add the rectangle body of the purse, continuing with working yarn as follows…

Body of Clutch Purse

Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in next sc and in each sc across. Turn. (27 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, (sc, dc) in first dc, *sk next dc, (sc, dc) in next dc; rep from * across, sc in top of tch. Turn. (27 sts)

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in next st and in each st across. Turn. (27 sts)

Rows 4-23: Rep Rows 2-3.

Seam Sides of Purse

Fasten off, leaving a long tail (at least 10″).

Fold bottom half of rectangle up against top half, RS together.

Use the long tail and a tapestry needle to sew a seam into one side of the purse.

Next, cut 10-15″ of yarn to sew a second seam on the other side of the purse.

Turn RS out after seaming.

Finishing

Fasten off.

Weave in loose ends.

Block purse into shape.

Attach toggle button to bottom center of purse.

Use this to attach to top flap.

Important Tips for Crocheting your clutch bag

Some things to keep in mind as you crochet the bag are:

  • Try to count sts after each increase row of the purse flap to make sure the stitch count matches for each side of triangle.
  • The Right Side (RS) of the purse flap is on odd-numbered rows.
  • Make sure you have 27 single crochet stitches at the end of the triangular purse flap. You will need these to create the rectangle portion of the purse body.
  • It helps to block the purse into its’ final rectangular measurements after it has been seamed together. The gauge is not too critical, but you do want a strong rectangle shape when finished.

Finished Size

The finished crochet clutch measures approximately 10.5″ width by 7″ length once seamed together.

Using your Modern Crochet Clutch Bag

Now it is time to enjoy using your finished crochet clutch as an accessory this season! It’s sturdy enough to hold small purse items and the texture looks lovely. Friends would love receiving one of these modern crochet bags as a gift, too.

love this purse! Wondering why there are 27 not 28, an even number on the critical row? Also, what are the final measuements of yours? I was doubling the cotton yarn. Thaks.

      Hi Elaine,
Glad you like the pattern. There are 27 stitches to begin the body of the purse section because that stitch pattern needs an odd number. The final measurements are listed under the ‘FINISHED SIZE’ heading. My bag measures approximately 10.5″ width by 7″ length once seamed together.
      Enjoy!
      Susan
