The finished rectangle piece measures approximately 10” long by 7.5” width.

Finish the Crochet Clutch

The next steps you will take are:

  • add fabric lining (optional),
  • then seam up the sides of the clutch.

Optional – Add Fabric Lining

How do you line a crochet clutch bag?  Follow the steps below to add a sturdy fabric lining inside…

Cut a piece of cotton, canvas, or linen fabric 8” by 7”.

Cut a piece of Heat n Bond 7.5” by 6.5”.  (The Heat n Bond will stiffen the fabric and help to make the purse sturdier).

Place the Heat n Bond piece directly on top of the wrong side of the fabric, centered so that there is a ¼” overlap all around.

Following Heat n Bond instructions, iron the piece of Heat n Bond to the wrong side of the fabric, paper side up.  Just place the iron on the Heat n Bond for 2 seconds per section.  You will be using the Medium heat setting on the iron, not steam.

When piece is cooled, peel off the Heat n Bond paper.  The wrong side of the fabric will now have a sticky residue.

Place the right side of the crochet rectangle face down.

Place the adhesive (wrong) side of the fabric down on top of the crochet rectangle, close to a bottom short edge of the rectangle.  Leave about ½” overlap on sides.

Next, place the Medium heat iron over the fabric for 6 seconds per section.  Try not to place the iron directly on the yarn.  This will adhere the fabric to the crochet clutch rectangle and help to stiffen it..

Once the fabric piece has cooled, gently tuck the raw edges underneath.

Lastly, sew the 4 sides of the fabric piece directly to the crochet rectangle using coordinating thread.  A whip stitch is a good choice to discreetly sew the piece on.

Seam the Clutch Purse

Place the right side of the crochet rectangle face down.

Fold the bottom edge up, ending about 2” from the top.  (The bottom edge will be the one that you added the fabric lining closest to).

Lastly, use yarn and a tapestry needle to sew seams joining the sides of the clutch bag.

Weave in any ends.

At this point you could also choose to attach a button or magnetic enclosure to secure the top flap of the clutch.

I just left it as is for easy and quick opening.

The finished crochet clutch measures about 7.5-8″ width by 4.5″ height.
