Crochet Cowl Pattern for Beginners {FREE}
There’s nothing better to warm your neck than a chunky crochet cowl. Would you love to learn how to crochet a cowl using just 2 repetitive rounds? I have a lovely crochet cowl pattern for you today that uses bulky yarn, so it works up more quickly than thinner yarns. You can expect to take under 2 hours crocheting this cowl – not bad! If you love Hue and Me bulky yarn patterns, you will really enjoy the color and texture of this one. The color is called ‘Rose Water’, and it is quite a lovely dusty pink. FREE PATTERN CROCHET COWL
How to crochet a cowl
The crochet cowl free pattern is easy to work once you master a repeat of 2 rounds. The cowl is worked in the round, with just 9 rounds total. You only need to know the double crochet (dc) and slip stitch (sl st) to work this cowl.
How much yarn needed for cowl? The great news is that you need just one skein of the Bulky yarn! This is enough to make the cowl, plus you will have yarn leftover in the skein to also make the coordinating EAR WARMER.
You will need the following supplies to make the crochet cowl:
Supplies
- Size M/N-13 (9 mm) hook
- 1 skein (approx. 137 yards) of size 5 Bulky yarn. I used LION BRAND’S HUE + ME in color ROSE WATER.
- scissors
- tapestry needle
Crochet Abbreviations
US Crochet terms are used.
Ch – chain
dc – double crochet
rep – repeat
RS – right side (faces you when finished)
sl st – slip stitch
st(s) – stitch(es)
sm – stitch marker
WS – wrong side (faces inside when finished)
PATTERN INFORMATION
Recently I began naming my crochet and knit patterns after local New England places of interest.
The “Rose Garden Cowl” is named after the Rose Garden in my hometown of Beverly, MA. It has gorgeous blooming rose bushes in the summer and is located right on the ocean at Lynch Park. I can envision snuggling up with this lovely, soft cowl for a winter garden stroll or Valentine date night.
The free crochet cowl pattern is provided below.

You will work the pattern for 9 rounds total. The WS (wrong side) will always be facing you as you work every round, then you will turn the cowl RS (right side) out when finished.

Important Tips for Crocheting your cowl
Some things to keep in mind as you crochet the cowl are:
- When crocheting the cowl in the round, the Wrong Side (WS) is always facing you. You will turn it Right Side (RS) out when finished.
- The SM (stitch marker) can be placed at the top of the Ch 3 at the beginning of each round. This will help you keep track of rounds.
- You will not be turning your work after each round. The rounds will be worked in the same direction, creating a slight spiral seam in the back.
- Feel free to adjust the circumference by adjusting the number of chained sts, ensuring an odd number of sts.
- Feel free to adjust the width by adjusting the number of rounds worked for a longer or shorter width.
Finished Size
The finished cowl measures approximately 28-29″ circumference by 7″ width as written.
