Free Beginner Crochet Cowl Pattern – Chunky Bulky Yarn, Under 2 Hours
If you’ve been looking for a crochet project that actually finishes in one sitting, this is it. The Rose Garden Crochet Cowl is a free beginner crochet cowl pattern that works up in under two hours using bulky yarn and just two repeating rounds. There’s no complicated stitch work, no counting rows obsessively, and no seaming — just a simple, satisfying rhythm that results in something genuinely beautiful.
The pattern uses only the double crochet and slip stitch, alternated in a two-round repeat that creates a subtle, textured surface with a lot of visual interest for very little effort. Once you’ve worked the first two rounds, you’ll have the whole thing memorized. It’s the kind of project that feels meditative rather than challenging, and it makes a wonderful gift, too.
The colorway shown is Lion Brand Hue + Me in Rose Water, a soft dusty pink that pairs beautifully with winter whites, camel coats, and charcoal grey. But this pattern works in any color. A deep burgundy, a warm cream, or a rich forest green would all be stunning.

FREE PATTERN CROCHET COWL
How to crochet a cowl
The crochet cowl free pattern is easy to work once you master a repeat of 2 rounds. The cowl is worked in the round, with just 9 rounds total. You only need to know BASIC STITCHES – the double crochet (dc) and slip stitch (sl st) – to work this cowl.
How much yarn needed for cowl? The great news is that you need just one skein of the Bulky yarn! This is enough to make the cowl, plus you will have yarn leftover in the skein to also make the coordinating ear warmer.
You will need the following supplies to make the crochet cowl:
Supplies
- Size M/N-13 (9 mm) hook
- 1 skein (approx. 137 yards) of size 5 Bulky yarn. I used LION BRAND’S HUE + ME in color ROSE WATER.

PATTERN INFORMATION
Recently I began naming my crochet and knit patterns after local New England places of interest.
The “Rose Garden Cowl” is named after the Rose Garden in my hometown of Beverly, MA. It has gorgeous blooming rose bushes in the summer and is located right on the ocean at Lynch Park. I can envision snuggling up with this lovely, soft cowl for a winter garden stroll or Valentine date night.
The free crochet cowl pattern is provided below, but you can also get the ad-free, printable pdf pattern bundle for both the BULKY COWL and EAR WARMER in the pattern SHOP! The pdf has step-by-step tutorial photos included, which could help you to work in the round:

COWL CROCHET PATTERN
Gauge: 4″ (10cm) square = 7.5 sts by 5 rounds (in pattern)
How do you make an easy crochet cowl?
NOTES: You will be crocheting the cowl in the round, using a stitch marker (sm) to keep track of each round. Be careful not to twist sts when joining for the first round. You will work the pattern for 9 rounds total. The WS (wrong side) will always be facing you as you work every round, then you will turn the cowl RS (right side) out when finished.
Follow instructions as follows…
Chunky Crochet Cowl Pattern

Important Tips for Crocheting your cowl
Some things to keep in mind as you crochet the cowl are:
- When crocheting the cowl in the round, the Wrong Side (WS) is always facing you. You will turn it Right Side (RS) out when finished.
- The SM (stitch marker) can be placed at the top of the Ch 3 at the beginning of each round. This will help you keep track of rounds.
- You will not be turning your work after each round. The rounds will be worked in the same direction, creating a slight spiral seam in the back.
- Feel free to adjust the circumference by adjusting the number of chained sts, ensuring an odd number of sts.
- Feel free to adjust the width by adjusting the number of rounds worked for a longer or shorter width.
Finished Size
The finished cowl measures approximately 28-29″ circumference by 7″ width as written.

Wearing your Chunky Crochet Cowl
A chunky crochet cowl is one of those accessories that elevates even the simplest outfit. The Rose Garden Cowl looks stunning draped over a long wool coat or a quilted jacket. The soft dusty pink reads as intentional and polished against neutral outerwear. For everyday wear, try it with a cream or ivory turtleneck and jeans for an effortless layered look that feels put-together without trying too hard.

Because the cowl sits at the neck rather than wrapping like a scarf, it stays in place beautifully throughout the day — no re-tucking or re-adjusting required. It’s also lightweight enough to wear indoors without overheating, which makes it more versatile than a traditional chunky scarf. If you make it in a deeper, richer color (such as burgundy, forest green, or charcoal), it transitions just as naturally into fall as it does into winter.

Don’t forget that the coordinating ear warmer uses the same yarn and the same stitch pattern. Making both from a single skein gives you a complete handmade accessory set that looks like it came from a boutique.
Get ready for the compliments on your textured stitches and pretty rose color!

What do you think of this free crochet cowl pattern? Are you intimidated to try it if you are a beginner? Don’t be!
Once you get the hang of rounds 2-3, the project will become repetitive, simple, and quick.

The Rose Garden Crochet Cowl is proof that a beginner project doesn’t have to look beginner. The textured stitch pattern, the generous drape of bulky yarn, and the simple elegance of a cowl silhouette combine into something that feels special, even though it works up in an afternoon.
