Tween Girl’s Bedroom
Over the past few months, my daughter and I have been updating her bedroom. She had outgrown her ‘little girl’ decor, and wanted a cool tween girl’s bedroom to hang out in.
Some of you may recall her sweet little girl’s room that I posted about in my old blog. I loved decorating that room for my little one! The room is very ‘little’, too. It’s probably the size of a large walk-in closet.
Fast forward to last year…my son graciously offered to switch rooms with our girl to give her more space. Wasn’t that generous of him? He had the larger bedroom (since he is older), but didn’t need all the space. After the switch, he’s now content with his cozy bedroom for reading.
My daughter and I got to work updating her ‘new’ bedroom with paint, linens, canopies and pillows galore. We re-used, re-cycled, found some bargains, and here is the result!

Sweet Dreams Canopy Bed
My son’s old bed stayed in this room, since the headboard & footboard wouldn’t fit in the smaller bedroom. We softened it up with cream linens, glam pillows, and a canopy made with white sheer curtains. I sewed gray yarn tassles on the edges of the curtains, and attached fairy lights to them (for nighttime ambiance).
We had a theme going for this room, which focused on the lyrics to the song ‘You Are My Sunshine”. I’ve sung that to my girl since she was very little, and she still loves it!
For wall art, I used some frames we already owned to showcase lyrics from the song and a sweet morning greeting “hello sunshine”. I also attached these easy gold star decals to the wall:
We recently added this sweet Boho yarn fringe wall hanging near her bed. I’ve got the DIY steps for that here!
Tween Reading Nook
My tween also has a cozy reading nook nearby, for when she wants to cuddle on the shaggy rug and grab a book…
My daughter’s books and ‘stuff’ are within arm’s reach in her cubby corner:
She loves animals, so it wasn’t surprising when she picked out this animal art at HomeGoods:
The reading nook canopy was the original canopy over her bed in the old bedroom. Re-purpose and re-use! I sewed on white & gray pom-poms to embellish the edges, then just stuck on more of the star decals.
Tween Vanity
As our girl gets older, she’ll want a place to write, dream and freshen up her hair (and make-up? Not yet, says Mom!) We set up this vintage white desk (found curbside!) in a corner, along with a $5 thrift store chair that I covered with white faux fur fabric:
I scored this mirror at HomeGoods, thinking it would fit well with our ‘sunshine’ theme. More star decals surround it:
A small inexpensive drugstore mirror got an easy update with black & gold washi tape! This clear tray was also found at HomeGoods, and will be the perfect place to stash jewelry, nail polish, hair ties, and eventually that makeup.
Last, but not least, we moved this gorgeous white vintage wardrobe from my bedroom to hers. I had been using it for crafts, but it looks much better in this tween bedroom now. She can use it for clothes, games, whatever she wants to ‘hide away’ (which I appreciate!):
You may recognize those pretty paper flowers up top from my Valentine Post. After decorating our dining room with the flowers, we thought they’d look lovely in this feminine room.
