What yarn is best for a crochet market bag?
Sturdy cotton yarn is the best choice for a strong bag, as are linen or bamboo yarns. You want the market bag to ‘breathe’, since it is a light and airy piece, and these organic yarns are perfect for that purpose.
Instructions to make the market bag are as follows…
Market Bag Crochet Pattern
Beginning with the Size H/8 (5mm) hook, chain 44 stitches with your COTTON YARN.
NOTE – First Ch 3 does count as one dc st.
Market Bag Panel (make 2)
Row 1: 1 dc into 8th ch from hook, [1 ch, 1 dc] 3 times into same ch, *skip 3 ch, 1 dc into next ch, [1 ch, 1 dc] 3 times into same ch; rep from * to last 4 ch, skip 3 ch, 1 dc into last ch. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 3, *1 dc into 2nd ch sp of shell, [1 ch, 1 dc] 3 times into same ch sp; rep from * to end, 1 dc into top of tch. Turn.
Rows 3-18: Rep Row 2.
Fasten off.
(Repeat steps above to make a 2nd panel).
Finishing
Block each panel to 15″ width by 12″ length.
Use same yarn and a tapestry needle to join the panels with an invisible seam along their side and bottom edges.
Weave in all loose ends.
Attach purse handles to tops of each panel by snapping them on over a gap between shells in the top row.
Optional: Sew a ‘Handmade’ tag to the bottom or top of your purse.
Optional: Add a tassel made from the same yarn to the top of your purse. I made my tassel by wrapping yarn 30 times around a 5″ piece of cardboard and following THESE INSTRUCTIONS on how to make a tassel.
Important Tips for Crocheting your market bag
Some things to keep in mind as you crochet the bag are:
- Try to crochet in a consistent manner so that the panels will be the same size. Make sure to block the panels prior to seaming them together.
- The crochet panels are reversible. Either side can be the Right Side (RS).
- It may help to place stitch markers add the top of your turning chains (tch) on each row to keep track of where to place the last dc in subsequent rows.
- Feel free to adjust the size of the market bag as follows: Adjust # of chained sts for width, ensuring total chains is a multiple of 4. Adjust # of rows worked for a longer or shorter length
Finished Size
The finished crochet bag measures approximately 15″ width by 12″ length.
