Free Knit Coaster Pattern — Easy, Cozy Coasters for Fall Decor
First Published: August 2026 | Skill Level: Beginner | Technique: Textured Knit & Purl | Season: Fall (Year-Round)
There’s something so satisfying about a stack of handmade coasters sitting on your coffee table. They’re small enough to knit in an afternoon, but they instantly make a space feel warmer and more unique. This free knit coaster pattern uses a simple textured stitch that looks much more complex than it actually is, which makes it a perfect quick project whether you’re brand new to knitting or just want something easy to work on while you watch TV. I designed these coasters with cozy fall color palettes in mind, but they’re just as sweet in soft, light neutrals for spring and summer. And because each one knits up so fast, they make wonderfully thoughtful handmade gifts too.

Why You’ll Love This Free Knit Coaster Pattern
- Beginner-friendly. This pattern only uses knit and purl stitches, so if you know the basics, you can make these.
- Fast and satisfying. Each coaster knits up quickly, making this the perfect “one episode of your favorite show” project.
- Beautifully textured. The stitch pattern creates a raised, waffle-like texture that looks intentional and elevated — no plain garter square here.
- Budget-friendly. You only need about 13 yards of yarn per coaster, so this is a great stash-buster project too.
- Gift-ready. Coasters are one of those handmade items people actually use every day. Tie a few together with twine for an instant hostess or housewarming gift.

Supplies & Materials Needed
Yarn
This pattern is written for medium weight (worsted, #4) yarn. I used Lion Brand Basic Stitch in Almond and Walnut (Cocoa) — two beautifully warm, neutral shades that feel right at home on a fall tabletop. You’ll need approximately 53 yards total to make a set of 4 coasters, so this is a great project for using up yarn you already have on hand.
Needles
- Size 8 (5.0mm) straight needles
Leather Labels
Basic Stitch Anti Pilling Yarn
Straight Knitting Needles (various sizes)
Knitting Notions
- Optional: a small “Handmade” leather tag for a sweet finishing touch
You can also make these with Size 5 (Bulky) or Size 6 (Super Bulky) yarn, using extra instructions included in the ad-free pdf file for this pattern.

Finished Size
One Size:
- Length: 4.5″ (11.5 cm)
- Width: 4.5″ (11.5 cm)
Measurements are for the finished and blocked coaster using Medium weight (size 4) yarn.
NOTES – First, you will cast on stitches to work garter stitch in rows to form the bottom edge of the coaster. Next, you will knit the coaster in a textured pattern, forming a square shape & creating garter stitch side edges. Next, you will knit the top edge of the coaster in garter stitch. Lastly, you will block the coaster into a square. You can also add a ‘Handmade’ leather tag to a corner.
Important tips: Use stitch markers at the first 2 and last 2 sts in each row. This will help you remember to work the garter stitch edges. The Right Side (RS) of the coaster will face you as you knit odd-numbered rows.

How to Style Your Knit Coasters for Fall
Once your coasters are off the needles and blocked, the fun part begins — styling them!
- For a warm, cozy fall look, stack a few coasters together and tie them with jute twine or a cinnamon stick for an easy, no-fuss centerpiece.
- Set them under a stack of mugs on your kitchen counter, tuck them onto a tiered tray with a mini pumpkin, or simply let a mismatched stack sit next to your coffee maker so they’re ready to grab.
- Warm neutrals like almond, walnut, and mustard pair beautifully with the rust, cream, and burnt-orange tones that are everywhere in fall decor this year — so even a small detail like a coaster can help pull your whole tablescape together.

Don’t put these away when the leaves fall, though! Because the stitch pattern and shape stay the same, these coasters are just as lovely in spring and summer. Simply swap in lighter, softer colors like cream, sage, or a pale blush to keep them feeling fresh and seasonal. A neutral coaster works with pretty much any decor style year-round, which is exactly the kind of timeless piece I love designing.
Why Knit Coasters Make Such Great Gifts
If you’re looking for a handmade gift that doesn’t take a huge time commitment, this is it. Knit coasters are useful, thoughtful, and something almost everyone will actually use, unlike a lot of handmade gifts that end up in a drawer. Because this pattern is so beginner-friendly, it’s also a lovely project to make with someone if you’re teaching a friend or family member to knit. A few tie-and-go ideas:
- Tie a set of 4 with twine and a cinnamon stick for a cozy hostess gift
- Pair a set with a favorite mug for a simple, personal birthday gift
- Add a “Handmade” leather tag to a corner for a polished, gift-shop finish
- Make a mixed set in a few different neutral colorways for a housewarming gift

Caring for Your Knit Coasters
Because these coasters are made with cotton-blend, worsted weight yarn, they hold up beautifully to everyday use.
- Spot clean as needed with a damp cloth, and if they need a deeper clean, hand wash in cool water and lay flat to dry to help them keep their shape.
- Avoid tossing them in the dryer, as heat can cause the yarn to felt or shrink.
Don’t forget this coaster pattern is also available as an ad-free, printable PDF with instructions for larger sized yarn. Grab the Knit Coaster pattern in my shop.
