FREE Scrubby Crochet Pattern {Easy Scrubbies!}
When you think about making something utilitarian for your home, why not also make it pretty? These crochet scrubbies are a quick and easy project for your home that will also delight your senses. I bet you can make a stack of the cotton crochet scrubbies for yourself and still find time to make more as gifts. They’re so much fun and addictive to crochet – just use scrap yarn! Read below to find the free scrubby crochet pattern that works up in no time with simple stitches.
If you have a bit of cotton leftover yarn and a crochet hook, you’re ready to make a stack of little crochet scrubbies. These ones I designed are smaller than regular wash cloths (only about 4.5″ square), so they’re good for scrubbing your face or a sweet baby. Use them whatever way you wish, even as coasters. You could also just stack them in your kitchen or bath for decoration.

Supplies
- Approx. 20 yds of Worsted Weight Cotton yarn (size 4) to make ONE scrubby wash cloth. I used Premier Home Cotton in color Cream, as well as the Beige color. I also used Sugar ‘n Cream in Overcast (the dark gray color). (I would not advise using acrylic yarn for scrubbies)
- Crochet hook size H-8 (5 mm)
- scissors
- tapestry needle

How to Crochet a Scrubby
NOTES: You will be crocheting the scrubby in straight rows. You will work the pattern for 6 rows total, then add a border around and a loop for hanging. The scrubby is reversible.
Easy Pattern
Instructions are as follows…
Main Scrubby
Beginning with the Size H-8 (5mm) hook, chain 22 stitches with your cotton yarn.
Row 1 : 2 DC in 4th ch from hook, *sk next 3 ch, SC in next ch, ch2, DC in next 3 ch; rep from * one more time, sk next 3 ch, SC in last ch . Turn.
Row 2: Ch 3, 2 DC in first SC, * sk next 3 DC, SC in top of next ch-2 sp, ch2, 3 DC in same ch-2 sp; rep from * one more time, SC in turning ch. Turn.
Repeat Row 2 four more times for a total of 6 rows.
Add a border
Do not turn after last row. SC 3 times in a corner stitch, and continue working SC stitches evenly down the side of the scrubby cloth, across the bottom, and back up the top (making sure to stitch 3 SC in each corner).
Next, work HDC around the scrubby cloth (including 3 HDC in each corner) to finish off the border.
Fasten off.
Weave in ends.
Important Tips for Crocheting scrubbies
Some great tips to keep in mind as you crochet the scrubby are:
- Try to count sts after each row to ensure you didn’t drop or add any stitch. Alternatively, you could place stitch markers at the beginning and end sts of each row to keep track.
- You may wish to use a stitch marker when working the border in the rounds, to keep track of the first stitch in each round.
- It really doesn’t take much yarn to crochet one scrubby, so be sure to make a bunch!
- The hook size doesn’t matter too much, since these can be any size.
Finished Size
The finished scrubby measures approximately 4.5″ square as written.
At this point your scrubby cloth may not be 100% square, so feel free to block it.
Showcase your crochet scrubbies!
These little scrubbies don’t take long at all to make, so you could probably whip up quite a stack of them when you have time on your hands. You can use one as a scrubby dishcloth while you are doing the dishes. May as well make that task enjoyable!
I also tied a sweet length of twine to the corners of mine to be able to hang them on hooks nearby. They make perfect crochet kitchen scrubbies for my farmhouse style kitchen. Making the scrubbies in different colors adds interest, too. It’s a great way to add texture to the sink area.
I can imagine these given as gifts for a special loved one or as a housewarming gift. A soft and thick crochet scrubbie would be lovely to open in a cute package, along with a bar of soap! (Hint – it is a great project for a Mother’s day gift)
Or if you are giving a spa themed gift, tuck facial masks and lotions in with these crochet cotton face scrubbies! The soft cotton yarn would be gentle on the skin.
I’ve also got a crochet pattern for larger crochet dish cloths if you’d rather have a bigger size.
