Supplies & Materials Needed
Yarn
This pattern is written for medium weight (worsted, #4) yarn. I used Lion Brand Basic Stitch in Almond and Walnut (Cocoa) — two beautifully warm, neutral shades that feel right at home on a fall tabletop. You’ll need approximately 53 yards total to make a set of 4 coasters, so this is a great project for using up yarn you already have on hand.

Finished Size
One Size:
- Length: 4.5″ (11.5 cm)
- Width: 4.5″ (11.5 cm)
Measurements are for the finished and blocked coaster using Medium weight (size 4) yarn.
NOTES – First, you will cast on stitches to work garter stitch in rows to form the bottom edge of the coaster. Next, you will knit the coaster in a textured pattern, forming a square shape & creating garter stitch side edges. Next, you will knit the top edge of the coaster in garter stitch. Lastly, you will block the coaster into a square. You can also add a ‘Handmade’ leather tag to a corner.
Important tips: Use stitch markers at the first 2 and last 2 sts in each row. This will help you remember to work the garter stitch edges. The Right Side (RS) of the coaster will face you as you knit odd-numbered rows.
Bottom of Coaster
With size 8 (5 mm) straight needles, CO 20 sts with size 4 yarn.
Bottom Edge:
Rows 1-2: Knit across. (20 sts)
Middle of Coaster
Stitch count (20) remains the same throughout the rest of the pattern.
Tip → Use stitch markers after 1st 2 sts and before last 2 sts to remind you to always knit those.
Textured Pattern
Row 1 (RS): Knit across.
Row 2: K2, purl across until last 2 sts, k2.
Row 3: K2, *k3, p1; rep from * across until last 2 sts, k2.
Row 4: Rep Row 2.
Row 5: Knit across.
Row 6: Rep Row 2.
Row 7: K3, *p1, k3; rep from * across until last st, k1.
Row 8: Rep Row 2.
Rep Rows 1-8 one more time, then Rep Rows 1-4 once again.
Top of Coaster
Top Edge:
Rows 1-2: Knit across.
BO.
Finishing the Knit Coaster
Block piece to form a 4.5” square.
Weave in loose ends to the WS of coaster.
Add optional ‘Handmade’ leather tag to a corner.
