FREE CROCHET SWIMSUIT COVER UP PATTERN
How to make an amazing crochet beach cover
The free crochet pattern is easy to work once you get the hang of the ‘Puff’ stitch in the pattern repeat. You will crochet two sides of the coverup, then seam them together. You will be working mostly with the BASIC CROCHET STITCHES , in addition to the ‘Puff’ stitch.
Can a beginner crochet this bathing suit cover-up?
Yes! This free pattern is friendly for a beginner skill level. Advanced beginners can handle the ‘Puff’ stitches, and the rest are simple stitches. And working with rectangular panels is a great choice for beginners. The double crochet stitches will make the top airy and easy to work with.

How to crochet a boho swimsuit cover up
NOTES: You will be crocheting the coverup in two long panels for each side using basic stitches, then seaming them together, leaving openings for the neckline and armholes.
- First you will crochet one long side of the coverup for the entire length of the front and back. The rows will be worked from side edge to center edge.
- Next, you will work the opposite mirrored side of the coverup.
- Next, you will block the two panels & seam them together, leaving a long opening for a V-neck neckline, and two openings for armholes.
- Lastly, you will add edging to the bottom by working in rounds.
What is the best yarn for a crochet boho top for summer?
Cotton, linen, or bamboo yarn is the best choice for lightweight summer crochet cover-ups. You want the top to ‘breathe’ in the summer, and these natural fibers are great for that purpose.
Instructions to make the cute crochet swimsuit cover up are as follows…
Boho Swimsuit Coverup Crochet Pattern
Follow the instructions below in the order indicated.
NOTE – Ch 1 does not count as a st,
ch 3 counts as 1st dc st throughout (you do not work 1st st since ch 3 becomes 1st st)
Special Stitch in pattern:
- Puff st: (Yo, insert hook into designated st and draw up loop) 3 times, yo, draw through 7 loops on hook. 1 Puff st made. (push Puff st toward RS)
Follow stitch and row counts using sizing: S (M, L, XL)
Side Panel (Make 2)
Using size H/8 crochet hook, ch 190 (190, 202, 202) with size 4 yarn.
Stitch counts (from 1st row) remain the same throughout panel.
Take time to match gauge for an accurate fit.
Side Edge:
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Turn. 189 (189, 201, 201) sts
Rows 2-3: Ch 1, sc in 1st st and in each st across. Turn.
Pattern Repeat (6 rows):
(Tip – place SM in top of ch 3 in next 3 rows to help identify first st)
Note that at the beginning of Rows 1-3 you are essentially chaining 4, but sm would be placed in 3rd ch.
Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), *ch 1, sk next st, dc in next st; rep from * across. Turn.
Rows 2-3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), *ch 1, sk next ch 1 sp, dc in next dc st; rep from * across, working the last dc in top of tch. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in 1st dc, *sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next dc; rep from * across, working last sc in top of tch. Turn.
Row 5 (WS): Ch 1, sc in 1st st, sc in next st, Puff in next st, *sc in next 3 sts, Puff in next st; rep from * across until last 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in 1st st and in each st across. Turn.
Work Pattern Repeat until piece measures approx. 6 (6, 8, 8)” which is
1 (1, 2, 2) more times if gauge is met.
(Remember that blocking will open up the width a little more.)
Center Edge:
Turn.
Rows 5-6: Ch 1, sc in 1st st and in each st across. Turn.
Row 7: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), *ch 1, sk next st, dc in next st; rep from * across. Turn.
For Sizes M and XL only:
- Rows 8-9: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), *ch 1, sk next ch 1 sp, dc in next dc st; rep from * across, working the last dc in top of tch. Turn.
Last Row (all sizes): Ch 1, sc in 1st dc, *sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next dc; rep from * across, working last sc in top of tch. Turn.
Fasten off.
Blocking
Block each of the two panels separately prior to seaming as follows:
Block to 9 (10, 11, 12)” width by 60 (60, 64, 64)” length.
Seaming two Panels Together
SEAM as follows:
Use yarn and a tapestry needle to join the Last Row (of the center edge) of each panel together with a seam, leaving approx. 18” open in the center for a V-neck neckline (or your desired opening size).
Be sure to align the bottom edges together and ensure RS faces same direction. It is a good idea to pin pieces together before seaming. I used an INVISIBLE SEAM METHOD, with RS facing together
Seaming Sides
Side SEAM as follows:
Next, fold the front over the back of the tunic at the shoulders with RS facing each other.
Use yarn and a tapestry needle to join the side edges of the panels together with a seam, leaving approx. 8 (8, 9, 9)” open near the top for arm holes. It is a good idea to pin pieces together before seaming.
Finishing
Turn RS out.
Add a scalloped edge around the bottom of your tunic as follows:
Bottom Edge (worked in the round):
(Tip – place sm in first st of rounds)
With RS facing, join yarn at bottom edge of tunic, near a seam.
Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), work sc stitches evenly around bottom of tunic, ensuring total stitch count is a multiple of 3. Join with sl st to first sc st.
TIP: When working at the edges of the rows, it is recommended to work 3 sc sts under the horizontal length of the ch-3 sp in each double crochet row and work 1 sc st at edge of each sc row.
Round 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in 1st st, *Ch 3, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * around. After last ch 3, sk last 2 sts and join with sl st to first sc st.
Fasten off.
Weave in all loose ends.
Embellishment Ideas:
You can optionally add fringe to the bottom and/or sleeve edges of your tunic. Learn HOW TO ADD FRINGE HERE.
A belt around the waist or ties at the V-neck opening would look great, and can accentuate the shaping of the garment.
Important Tips for Crocheting your Crochet Beach Cover Up
Some things to keep in mind as you crochet the top are:
- Note that the stitch pattern is not reversible, since you want your Puff stitches to be showcased on the Right Side.
- Pay attention to the Pattern Repeat, which is worked multiple times for the various sizes.
- Feel free to customize the coverup as follows:
- chain more stitches to begin if you would like a longer length coverup. You will need to chain a multiple of 4, plus 2. (ensure enough yarn)
- make your V-neck and armhole openings any length you wish by adjusting where your seam(s) end
- leave the front seam out to make it a cardigan, then leave out the bottom edge (worked in the round)
