Striped Crochet Blanket Pattern – Rosebuds Stripe 9

It is my great pleasure to be participating in the BLOSSOMING BLANKET CAL (crochet-a-long) this spring! Have you had a chance to starting making the gorgeous striped crochet blanket with this CAL? I have teamed up with 10 other crochet designers to participate in this striped blanket pattern. Hortense, from Knitting with Chopsticks, has done a fabulous job of organizing the crochet-a-long this spring. Each Tuesday and Friday from May 7-June 18, 2024, the various designers are offering their FREE blanket stripe pattern on their blog. The beautiful blanket can be made with any color combination you choose. Use cotton yarn for a light, cozy blanket for spring and summer. The size of the blanket will be approx. 53″ by 63″, including the blanket border.

Introducing…the Rosebuds Crochet Blanket Stripe pattern

Now it is my turn to provide the free crochet pattern, made with basic crochet stitches. I have designed a very simple ‘Rosebuds’ stitch pattern for the 9th stripe of the blanket. Puff stitches are one of my favorite crochet stitches to work with, so I thought it would be fun to cluster some small Puff stitches together to appear as rosebuds. Along with simple rows of single crochet, I also added some rows of single crochet worked into front & back loops for the pattern repeat. I wanted these rows to represent a garden path. My sample stripe was made with WeCrochet’s Flamingo color, which I love!

Hortense used the ‘Hollyberry’ color on my stripe pattern for her sample blanket, which looks lovely, too:

FREE CROCHET BLANKET STRIPE PATTERN

The idea behind my crochet blanket stripe pattern is to create one wide rectangle with BASIC STITCHES, working in rows. You will be crocheting the rows using simple single crochet and small Puff stitches.

The following is a list of supplies you would need to create this stripe of the blanket. Use similar yarn (size 4, worsted weight yarn) and the same size crochet hook to make your own. This is a great way to use up scrap yarn. The easy stripe pattern shouldn’t take took long, and makes a (somewhat) mindless crochet project. The skill level is Beginner.

Supplies

  • 4.5 mm or 4.25 mm hook (US G – 6 )
  • Worsted weight yarn: WeCrochet Comfy yarn (75% cotton, 25% acrylic, 1.8 oz, 50g, 109yd) (color ‘Flamingo’ used in sample):
    • You will need about 125g/250m/270yd for this section of the blanket.
  • yarn needle (tapestry needle)

WeCrochet had made it really easy for you to get your supplies for the entire blanket. Grab the BLOSSOMING BLANKET CAL KIT HERE to find everything you need. The kits can be made with different yarn color combinations. If this is your first time crocheting a blanket, they really make it easy for you. And it’s a great reason to buy new yarn! What yarn colors are you using for your stripes? I’d love to hear!

How to Crochet a Blanket Stripe

Here I will walk you through each step of making the Rosebuds blanket stripe. You will be using the simple single crochet stitch, as well as smaller Puff stitches.

Gauge – The gauge for this pattern is 14.5 st by 17.5 rows for a 10 cm by 10 cm / 4” by 4” square.

You will be working mainly in single crochet stitches with groupings of Puff stitches to add dimension.  The Puff stitches are arranged in rows of individual Puffs as ‘Rose buds’, as well as rows where Puff stitches are grouped together to form blossoming ‘Rose buds’. Ribbed lines formed by working single crochet sts in Back and Front loops add horizontal interest.

Special Stitch:

Puff: (Yo, insert hook into designated st and draw up loop) 3 times, yo, draw through 7 loops on hook.  1 Puff st made.
Puff sts are normally worked on a WS row and the stitch is naturally pushed outward away from you (toward RS).

NOTES:

Ch 1 does not count as a st.

RS is worked on odd-numbered rows, WS is worked on even-numbered rows.

Puff sts should always be pushed out toward RS.

The stitch count will remain at 180 sts.

You will begin by working on the previous row of Stripe 8.

Section of single Rosebuds:

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.  (180 sc sts)

Rows 2-3: Rep Row 1. (180 sc sts)

Row 4 (WS): Ch 1, sc in first 4 sts, *Puff in next st, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * across until last 2 sts, Puff in next st, sc in last st. Turn. (30 Puff sts, 150 sc sts)

Rows 5-6: Rep Row 1. (180 sc sts)

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st across. Turn. (180 sc sts)

(NOTE – in the next Row 11, you will be pushing the Puff sts toward you on this RS)

Row 11: Ch 1, sc in first 3 sts, *Puff in next st, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * across until last 3 sts, Puff in next st, sc in last 2 sts.  Turn.  (30 Puff sts, 150 sc sts)

Row 12: Ch 1, sc in first 3 sts, *Puff in next st, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * across until last 3 sts, Puff in next st, sc in last 2 sts.  Turn. (30 Puff sts, 150 sc sts)

Rows 13-14: Rep Row 1. (180 sc sts)

Row 20: Ch 1, sc in first st, *Puff in next st, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * across until last 5 sts, Puff in next st, sc in last 4 sts. Turn. (30 Puff sts, 150 sc sts)

Rows 21-22: Rep Row 1. (180 sc sts)

You will end with a WS row. At the end of the row, you can fasten off your yarn.

At this point, you can weave in your loose ends and get ready to begin the next stripe for the rest of the blanket. Get your new color ready, and follow along with the FREE BLOSSOMING BLANKET CAL.

Sizing:

This stripe section of the blanket is approximately 5” high and 127 cm / 50” wide. The finished size of your blanket (with all 12 stripes and the border) will be approx. 53″ x 63″ / 135 x 160 cm.

If you want to use this design for another blanket and change the size, you can add / remove a multiple of 6 stitches.

Important Tips for Crocheting your Blanket Stripe

Some things to keep in mind as you work the Rosebuds blanket stripe crochet pattern are:

  • It’s a good idea to use a stitch marker (SM) to keep track of the first st in each row.
  • Ensure the Puff stitches are prominent on the Right Side (RS).
    • Push the Puff stitches away from you on WS rows.
    • Push the Puff stitches toward you on RS rows
    • You can work the next sc stitch after the Puff stitch snugly after ensuring the Puff is facing the correct way
  • Have your next color ready to work the next stripe pattern upon the last row of this one.

Don’t forget that this crochet stripe blanket pattern is also available in an ad-free pdf eBook.  The eBook has helpful photos and some patterns have a link to a video tutorial.  Grab the BLOSSOMING BLANKET CROCHET EBOOK HERE and grab your yarn needs in the SUPPLY KIT HERE.
