Lavender Harvest
A couple of years ago I planted 2 lavender shrubs at our front entry. This year they have finally blossomed with many flowers. I’m thrilled! When I sit out on these front steps, I enjoy the loveliest lavender scent wafting by. It brings such tranquility.
I also found a bargain-priced lavender plant at the grocery store last week and put it in my urn out back as part of a French Country style setting…love it!
Recently I did some research and decided to go ahead and harvest a bundle of stems this year from one of the front step plants. Although I probably should have done this a little earlier (when the buds hadn’t fully opened yet), I think they’re still a cute bunch. I didn’t prune the whole bush because I still wanted plenty to enjoy outside.
Steps to harvest lavender:
Harvesting the lavender couldn’t be easier. Here are the steps I took (you can also find wonderful instructions at Garden Therapy):
- grab some long stems that are ready to harvest
- prune them near the base, but not as far down as the woody part of the stem (save the leaves underneath)
- tie the bundle together with twine
- hang upside down in a cool area away from sun
Lavender Harvest Display
Once the lavender is tied up in a cute bundle, part of the fun of the harvest is to display how pretty it is! I tried out a few places to hang my bundle in the dining room…
Can you smell this glorious scent from here?
I wish they could stay in the dining room, but it’s just too sunny in this room. Maybe I’ll move them near my bedside for sweet dreams…
