Pattern for Knit Lavender Sachet

How to Knit a Lavender Sachet (Free Pattern!)

Do you love the smell of lavender? Enjoy tucking in a cozy lavender sachet under your pillow? Many crafters enjoy making lavender sachets as gifts, and sewing is usually the way to make them. But have you thought of making a knit lavender sachet? Knitting is a perfect way to add texture and coziness to the sachet, and you will love how soft it feels!

I enjoy incorporating lavender with a farmhouse theme, so today I have a farmhouse style knit pattern for you – a cable knit lavender sachet!  I used the same stitch pattern that was showcased in my knitted napkin rings on my Spring Farmhouse table setting

Similar to the napkin rings, the lavender sachet has a subtle cable look, yet you don’t have to work with a cable needle while knitting one.  I used a simple LT (Left Twist) stitch to get the look.  The sachets are easily made with 32 rows, so they won’t take you too much time.

Wouldn’t they make a lovely hostess or Mother’s Day gift?  Treat a special lady with the soft touch of knit and soothing scent of lavender.  Another idea is to stuff them with balsam for Christmas.

How do you knit a sachet?

The sachet will be knit as a rectangle, with a right side (RS) and wrong side (WS).  The finished measurement of the rectangle will be approx. 7” wide by 5 1/2″ tall.  When finished, simply fold the 7″ width in half & sew the bottom and sides together by weaving in yarn as a seam.  Lastly, fill with lavender buds prior to sewing the top.

Stitch to know – Left Twist (LT):  K 2nd st on LH (left-hand) needle tbl (through-back-loop), then K first 2 sts tog tbl.

(This video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVU7fYUBjIY has a great tutorial with 3 options on how to knit the Left Twist stitch.  I used option 1).

Steps for Knit Lavender Sachet

Cast on 40 stitches, leaving a long enough tail to sew a seam at bottom (and perhaps also up one side).

Foundation row (WS): Purl.

Row 1 (RS): *LT, k3, p3; rep from * to end.

Row 2 (WS): *K3, p5; rep from * to end.

Row 3: *K1, LT, k2, p3; rep from * to end.

Row 4: repeat row 2.

Row 5: *K2, LT, k1, p3; rep from * to end.

Row 6: repeat row 2.

Row 7: *K3, LT, p3; rep from * to end.

Row 8: repeat row 2.

Rows 9-32: repeat rows 1-8  3 times.

Bind off.

Fill Sachet with Lavender

Fold the 7″ width of the knitted rectangle in half with right side facing out, and then sew a seam with a tapestry needle to join the bottom and sides together using your tail yarn ends (or extra yarn).  Weave in any loose ends with the tapestry needle.

At this point you can fill your sachet with lavender directly, or perhaps insert a small cotton bag filled with lavender (if you are concerned with the lavender falling out of the gaps in the knit).

Next, use some yarn & tapestry needle to weave in a seam at the top of your sachet.  Done!

Add a Chalkboard Gift Tag

Another gift idea would be to present the sachet with a cute chalkboard label (gift tag). I found these particular labels on the Save on Crafts website a few years ago, but they don’t seem to be available any longer.
