Knit Candle Cozy Pattern

How do you knit a candle cozy?

The Snowflake candle cozy is straightforward to knit, even for beginners.  Only Knit and Purl stitches are used. You will need to join a contrasting colored yarn (CC) with your main colored yarn (MC) to form the snowflake shape. The pattern gives specific instructions on which colored yarn to use and when, so it shouldn’t be too difficult.

You will need the following supplies to make the snowflake knit candle cozy:

Supplies

  • tapestry needle, scissors

Abbreviations

US knitting terms are used.

CO – cast on

K – knit stitch

P – purl stitch

Rep – repeat

[ ] x times – do stitches inside brackets x number of times

Sts – stitches

RS – Right Side (side that faces you when finished)

The finished candle cozy measures approximately 4” high by 10” circumference and should fit around a candle holder with 3” diameter and at least 4” height.  Do not wrap the knitted cozy directly around a candle since hot melted wax should not touch the yarn.

PATTERN Information

The free pattern for the Snowflake motif is provided below.

NOTES: First you will be knitting the candle cozy as a small rectangle to start, then joining the sides to form the cozy.

Special Notes about Stranding

I have provided a written pattern for the Scandinavian motif rows. The pattern appears as a snowflake worked within 15 rows.

This pattern requires you to use more than one yarn (MC and CC), which is also known as yarn stranding. You will want your main color (MC) to serve as the background color for this pattern, and the contrasting color (CC) serves as the dominant color. The dominant color should ‘pop’ out a bit from the background color.

The ‘strand’ refers to the way each yarn will stretch across (strand or float) the wrong side (WS) of your project when not being used. In order to achieve this color dominance during your knitting, just remember to keep the dominant color (CC) stranded below the background color (MC) on the WS and vice versa – keep the background color (MC) stranded above the dominant color (CC).

These candle cozies are just lovely! I was excited to see they are knit as I am a crocheter learning to knit since the beginning of the year. I have a few projects under my belt and can’t wait to add these. Thank you!

Thank you Monica, I am so happy that you like the candle cozies! I agree that they will be a good beginner’s knitting project to tackle. It’s not too hard to join the contrasting colored yarn throughout and they don’t take long. Let me know how it turns out!
