Jute Bags with Sheep Stencil

Not sure if you’re aware, but National Craft Month is coming up in March. It’s a great time to celebrate creativity and crafting, by letting your imagination soar and taking time to learn new skills. I’ve got some posts coming up to help you with storing those projects in fun craft bags. I’m especially fond of stenciling jute bags with a Sheep silhouette, then storing yarn projects in them. These bags have double the appeal – enticing yarns, needles & hooks, and a cute farm animal!

If you’d like to personalize your own craft bags, this project couldn’t be easier. You’ll just need a few supplies and about 15 minutes of time.

Supplies

  • Jute tote bags that are big enough to hold your intended craft supplies. I found bags that are 11″ x 9″ on Amazon.
  • stencil of a sheep. I found mine on eBay a while ago (and it’s not there anymore), but you could try a stencil from Amazon or Etsy. (I also have a free sheep template in my canvas bag post.)
  • a piece of thick paper to insert inside the bag while you stencil
  • white craft paint (or your desired color) and small foam brush
  • tape

Steps to stencil jute bags

First, gather your supplies. You can print & cut out a sheep template on hard card stock to use as the stencil, or use a purchased vinyl stencil. Another option is to use your Cricut machine to make one. I don’t have one of these machines, but I hear they’re all the rage!

Slip a thick piece of paper inside the jute bag to ensure the paint doesn’t soak through to the back of the bag.

Secure your sheep stencil on the front of the jute bag with tape.

Using the foam brush, softly dab on white craft paint inside the stencil. Be careful not to bleed the paint through the edges. Although if that happens, you could always improvise and make your sheep a little more ‘woolly’. 🙂

Remove stencil and allow to dry.

That’s all there is to it!

Tuck your craft projects into the jute bags

Now you have a rustic style jute craft bag to hold your favorite craft supplies. Tuck those knitting needles, crochet hooks, yarn skeins, fabrics, etc. into the bags and get cozy.

Here I’ve got some favorite projects in the bags, such as my gray textured knit cowl:

My grain sack sachet makes the bag smell heavenly, too!

I also have some favorite yarns tucked in to tote around when a knitting mood strikes:

What would you put inside your craft bag? Would you stencil a sheep on the outside, or perhaps another favorite farmhouse animal?
