How to crochet a bucket bag

There are different types of crochet bags, and this one works up simply to form a sturdy bucket bag that you can wear cross-body. It is a nice size to hold small projects or for running quick errands.

NOTES: You will be crocheting the bucket bag bottom up in rounds in one long spiral. Then you will add open dc rounds near the top to weave cotton cord through.

Instructions to make the crossbody bag are as follows…

Bucket Bag Crochet Pattern

Follow the instructions below in the order indicated.

NOTE – Ch 3 counts as one dc st in dc rounds. Ch 1 does not count as a st.

Place a sm in every round to keep track of first st.

Bucket Bag Body

With the bottom of the hard bag bottom facing, use a small size crochet hook (such as 3.75mm) to work a sc into each hole of the bag bottom using size 4 yarn, join with sl st to first sc st. (The bag bottom should have 50 holes, so 50 sc sts).

Next, switch to size I crochet hook, and continue with RS (outside of bag) facing.

Assuming 50 sts to start with, increase st count as follows:

Base Round: Ch 1, *work sc into next 3 sts, 2 sc into next st; rep from * around until last st, 3 sc into last st. DO NOT JOIN. (63 sc sts)

Note → if your bag bottom does not have 50 holes, you will have to adjust this base round so that the increases are spaced out evenly to total 63 sts.

Pattern Repeat:

Round 1: Sc into each st around. Be sure to pm at first st each round and do not join at first st. (63 sc sts)

Rep Round 1 until reach approx. 8″ height (approx 25 rounds).

Continue by working an open design pattern as follows; pm at first st in each round:

Open Design Pattern:

Open Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), *sk next 2 sc, ch 2, dc in next sc; rep from * around, ending last rep after ch 2, join with sl st to top of ch-3 (1st dc). (62 sts)

Open Rounds 2-3: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), *ch 2, dc in next dc; rep from * around, ending last rep after ch 2, join with sl st to top of ch-3 (1st dc). (62 sts)

Open Round 4: 2 sc in next ch-2 sp, *sc in next dc, 2 sc in next ch-2 sp, rep from * around. DO NOT JOIN. (62 sc sts)

Rep Round 1 (from Pattern Repeat) 1 more time. Join with sl st to 1st sc. (62 sts)

Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in loose ends to WS (inside of bag).

Weave 32” of 4mm cotton macrame cord through the dc sts in the middle (round 2) of open design pattern.

Pull each end of cord through the 2 holes in the wood toggle button.

Knot the two ends of cord and fringe the ends if desired.

Cinch cord with toggle button, and tie ends to close bucket bag.

Clip two ends of a long leather purse strap to opposite sides of top of bag. This will allow you to wear the bag cross-body.

  • Note that the st count changes to 62 with the open design pattern.
  • Feel free to adjust bag size as follows :
    • work more/less rounds prior to open design rounds to adjust height
