DIY Summer Infinity Scarf - wearing unwrapped, feature

DIY Summer Infinity Scarf

What’s your summer fashion style? I’m guessing you enjoy a classic summer look, which always includes a little blue & white. Neutrals are the go-to colors here at A Box of Twine, and that includes fashion. Today I’ve got a DIY summer infinity scarf pattern for you to make. It is lightweight, timeless, and has a splash of nautical feel.

My favorite part of this infinity scarf is the leather & suede cuff piece. I used thin white suede ribbon and a small piece of leather to gather the scarf on the side. I love the pop this cuff adds to the look. Take a try at this simple DIY! Bonus: you can sew the scarf and add embellishments in one quick afternoon. Keep reading to see how…

Supplies

  • one rectangle of lightweight fabric, measuring 15-16″ wide by at least 55″ long (add more length if you’d like the scarf to drape lower).
  • small piece of leather, measuring approx. 1.5″ by 1″ (I cut my piece from a Brown Deertan Trim piece called “Realeather Crafts” made by Silver Creek Leather Co.)
  • approx. 20″ of thin (4mm wide) suede ribbon. (I used white suede ribbon from a pack of 6 I had – see below)
  • leather hole punch tool
  • sewing machine, iron, thread, sewing needle, scissors

Prepare scarf supplies

You will need to wash and press the (15″ by 55″) rectangle of fabric prior to sewing.

Next, cut a small leather piece to measure about 1.5″ by 1″.

Cut a length of thin suede ribbon at 20″.

Sew Infinity Scarf

Sew seam on long edges

The first step you will take to make the summer infinity scarf is to fold the fabric in half lengthwise, with Right Sides together.

Pin in place and sew a 1/4″ seam lengthwise down the long side.

Join infinity scarf ends

Turn sewn scarf right side out, then press one short end of the scarf inward about 1/2″.

Next, you will need to join the scarf ends together.

Being careful not to twist the scarf, insert the raw short edge inside the pressed short edge of the scarf.

Pin the two short sides together.

Next sew a 1/4″ seam to join them.

Attach Cuff

At this point you will make the cuff for the infinity scarf.

Ensure the suede ribbon is trimmed to about 20″.

Make 4 small holes in the corners of the leather rectangle piece. Make sure the hole is big enough for the suede ribbon to slide through.

Weave the suede ribbon through the top two holes of the rectangle, going from front to back, then back to front.

Wrap the remaining suede ribbon around the scarf two times.

Next, weave the other end of the suede ribbon through the bottom two holes of the leather piece (in a similar way as the top).

Sew or use hot glue to join the ends of the suede ribbon together, making sure to adjust the leather piece in front & ribbon ends in back.

Adjust the suede ribbon at the front of the cuff so that the wrapped ribbon is behind the leather piece.

Voila! The finished scarf should measure approximately 52″ circumference (or longer, if you used more length). Care instructions are to spot clean and air dry.

Showcase your scarf!

Now it’s time to show off your summer infinity scarf! Simply pull it over your head, then wrap it around a second time.

Slide the cuff wherever you want it to be featured. I like wearing mine to the side.

Another alternative is to wear the scarf long, just draping it over your head once.

The summer scarf has such a lightweight and nautical feel, it will be just what you need when the cool ocean breeze comes through. Pair it with a white T-shirt and jeans, or a Navy blue summer maxi dress.

Make lots of theses scarves, and give them to your friends! They may be the hit of a 4th of July barbecue. Feel free to experiment with the fabric, leather, and suede colors to make your favorite combination.
