SUMMER CROCHET NECKLACE PATTERN

Gauge: not critical

How to crochet a necklace

There are different types of crochet necklaces, and this one features one main shape with long ties to form a bold statement piece. Just the accessory you need this summer – a lightweight, beachy necklace with Boho flair! Wear it to the beach, shopping, or summer date night out.

NOTES: You will be crocheting the main piece of the necklace in rows, working top down. Next, you can block the piece and add two long ties on each top corner of the piece, to use for hanging the necklace. Add optional embellishments, too!

What yarn is best for a crochet necklace for summer?

Light cotton yarn is the best choice for a summer necklace, as are linen or bamboo yarns. You want the necklace to be lightweight & breathable for summer, and these natural fibers are great for that purpose.

Instructions to make the necklace are as follows…

Necklace Crochet Pattern

Follow the instructions below in the order indicated.

NOTE – Ch 1 does not count as a st, Ch 4 counts as one tr st. You can place a stitch marker in each row to keep track of first st.

Using size H/8 crochet hook, ch 16 with your yarn.

Row 1 (RS): Dc in 4th ch from hook (1st 3 ch count as 1 dc) and in each ch across. Turn. (14 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first 6 sts, ch 5, sk next 2 sts, sc in last 6 sts. Turn. (12 sc sts, 1 ch-5)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in 1st st, ch 2, work 7 tr in ch-5 sp, ch 2, sc in last st. Turn. (2 sc sts, 7 tr sts, 2 ch-2)

Row 4: Ch 4 (counts as 1st tr), tr in next 3 tr, 3 tr in next tr, tr in next 3 tr, tr in last sc st. Turn. (11 tr sts)

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in 1st tr, sc in next 4 tr, 3 dc in next tr, sc in next 5 tr. Turn. (10 sc sts, 3 dc sts)

Row 6: Ch 1, sl st in next 6 sts, (sc, ch 5, sc) in next st, sl st in last 6 sts. Turn. (12 sl sts, 2 sc sts, 1 ch-5)

Fasten off.

FINISHING

Block the necklace piece to form straight edges if desired.

Weave in loose ends to WS.

Add ties to hang necklace around neck:

Cut 2 strands of yarn, approximately 36” each (for a long necklace).

Feel free to cut them to a shorter length if you would like your necklace to hang higher.

Fold each 36” yarn piece in half, then loop through top corners of necklace piece.

Adding Fringe and Embellishments

If desired, you can add fringe to the bottom center hole of the necklace.

I did this by:

  • cutting five pieces of yarn approx 8″ length each
  • folding each piece in half
  • using crochet hook to loop each piece through the bottom center hole

You can also sew small capize shell discs onto the necklace. I sewed 3 discs on the front of my sample ‘silver’ necklace.

Another option is to add fringe to the bottom center hole of the necklace and attach a crochet bead to the fringe to make a tassel. I did this with the ‘swan’ colored necklace by:

  • cutting five pieces of yarn approx 8″ length each
  • folding each piece in half
  • using crochet hook to loop each piece through the bottom center hole
  • using a tapestry needle to weave each piece of fringe through the holes of a crochet bead

Important Tips for Crocheting your necklace

Some things to keep in mind as you crochet the necklace are:

  • It’s a good idea to use a stitch marker (sm) to keep track of the first st in each row.
  • It’s a good idea to block the piece after crocheting, so that the edges are straight.
  • The instructions have you make ties that are 18″ long each, but you can customize to any length you want to hang the necklace.
  • Feel free to embellish the necklace as follows:
    • add fringe to the center bottom hole
    • add capize shell discs or crochet beads

Finished Size

The finished crochet necklace piece measures approximately 3.5″ width by 4″ length. Measurements do not include length of ties or fringe.

Using your Summer Crochet Necklace

Now it is time to enjoy showcasing your crocheted necklace accessory! Wear it for a day by the sea, or evenings out in the warm weather. The necklace will give you Mermaid and Boho vibes. Friends would love receiving one of these crochet necklaces as a perfect gift, too.

Just feature it as your main accessory with your favorite summer outfits…
