How to Knit Boot Cuffs for Beginners
This easy pattern is a great pattern for beginners, since you only need to understand how to knit and purl. Also, you won’t need to use circular needles to knit in the round. Rather, you will be knitting the easy way in a rectangle for the set of boot cuffs, and then seaming them to create the circular cuff.
Supplies
- Size 7 (4.5 mm) and size 10 (6.0 mm) straight knitting needles
- approx. 50 yards of Medium (size 4) worsted weight yarn to make 2 boot cuffs. I used Vanna’s Choice by Lion Brand yarn in the Pale Grey color. (avoid bulky yarn so that the cuffs will fit)
- scissors
- tapestry needle
FREE Knit Boot Cuff Pattern
You will be knitting the cuffs as a rectangle to start, then joining the short sides at the end to form the cuff circle. The first 8 rows of the cuff form the foundation, which will provide a tighter fit around the upper calf. The last 12 rows of the cuff are knit using the looser size 10 needles to form the “Broken Rib” pattern.
Knitting Abbreviations
K – knit stitch
P – purl stitch
RS – Right Side (side that faces you when finished)

EASY KNIT BOOT CUFF PATTERN
Gauge: 4″ (10cm) square = 16 sts by 20 rows.
How do you knit a set of boot cuffs?
NOTES: First, you will begin the bottom of the cuff by casting on, and knitting several rows for the foundation to tuck into the boots. At first the cuff will be knit into a rectangle.
Next, you will knit in a broken rib pattern to form the main portion of the cuff.
Lastly, you will bind off and seam the short ends of the rectangle to make the cuff circular.
INSTRUCTIONS for Simple Boot Cuffs
Finished Size
* This lovely pattern is written for size Small, which measures approximately 12″ circumference around the upper calf. If you would like to add more inches to that size, simply add multiples of 4 stitches per each additional inch. Similarly, you can decrease stitches for a child’s size fit. Your stitch total must be a multiple of 4.
How many stitches do you cast on for boot cuffs?
Beginning with the size 7 knitting needles, cast on 48 stitches for size Small (see note* above to adjust size)
Foundation Rows
Rows 1-2: *K2, p2: repeat from * to end. (These initial 2 rib rows help to prevent curling)
Row 3 (RS): Knit across to end.
Row 4: Purl across to end.
Rows 5-8: Repeat Rows 3-4. (Stockinette stitch pattern)
Your bottom foundation rows should look like this. You can see the knit stitches from the stockinette pattern:
Cuff Pattern Rows
Switch to size 10 knitting needles and proceed as follows in a Broken Rib pattern:
Rows 9-12: *K2, p2: repeat from * to end.
Rows 13-16: *P2, k2: repeat from * to end.
Rows 17-20: *K2, p2: repeat from * to end.
Bind off.
Sew up seam on short ends, then weave in yarn ends. Repeat all steps for the second cuff. (Each cuff took me a couple of hours to knit)
How long should knitted boot cuffs be?
The size Small finished boot cuff measures approximately 12″ circumference by 4″ height. That is a great size to tuck into the top of your boots. These boot cuffs will fit nicely inside both tall boots and shorter boots.
Boot Cuff Fashion
Now comes the fun part…wearing your new boot cuffs! The cuffs are different than leg warmers, since they’re smaller and fit under boots.
Just slip them on your legs, step into a boot, and tuck the foundation rows under the top of the boot. They have a perfect snug fit. Make sure the Right Side faces out, while the Wrong Side faces inward.
I’m wearing mine under a pair of leather cute brown boots here:
The boot cuffs also pair well with a sleek black pair of boots. They make a great winter accessory, too.
You’ll love how they look peeking over the tops of your boots.
And wouldn’t these boot cuffs also compliment my textured cowl pattern, another great project for beginner knitters?
Let me know if you give this boot cuff pattern a try…I’d love to see how you style them! This would make a great project for your leftover yarn since they don’t require much.
