How to Make a Balsam Sachet

There’s nothing better than the smell of a fresh Christmas tree in your home. Whether you cart a tree home from the tree lot or the woods, the moment you bring it indoors your home becomes Balsam heaven. Wouldn’t you love to savor that scent even longer? You can capture it with a balsam sachet. Let me show you how easy it is to make a balsam sachet that not only delivers on scent, but looks adorable, too.

I’m sure you can think of a dozen people that would enjoy receiving a balsam sachet as a hostess gift, teacher’s gift, or a sweet welcome to the neighborhood during the Christmas season. One squeeze of the sachet will bring to mind fond memories of decorating Christmas trees or winter wonderland hikes. Capture the nostalgia by making this simple sachet!

How to Make a Christmas Tree Sachet

There are just a few steps to make this balsam sachet that smells like a Christmas tree.

Step 1 – Cut and embellish fabric squares

Using your linen or cotton fabric, cut a pair of 6″ fabric squares for each balsam sachet you plan to make.

If your linen fabric is a solid color, such as white, feel free to embellish one of the fabric squares with a Christmas stamped image or a message in the center. You can see below I stamped my squares with Christmas greenery and ‘balsam’, as well as a flying reindeer. (Perhaps it is Blitzen on his way to Santa’s sleigh?)

Feel free to embellish your sachets with fitting Christmas images such as a Santa, Christmas tree, Christmas wreath, or stocking. You could use a red or green inkpad, too, if you want traditional colors.

The sachets would also look pretty with simple stamped messages such as Believe or ‘O Christmas Tree’. The Christmas messages pair perfectly with the nostalgic balsam scent.

Check out my FARMHOUSE CHRISTMAS MUSLIN GIFT BAGS for other ideas on how to embellish these sachets. I added traditional Christmas plaid fabric to the front of those gift bags.

An alternative idea is to use fabric with a Christmas pattern to make the Christmas sachets. For instance, I made CHRISTMAS GIFT BAGS OUT OF SHOWER CURTAIN FABRIC last year. Did you know shower curtains come in Christmas designs? They are a clever way to purchase inexpensive fabric for craft projects.

Step 2 – Sew fabric squares together

Next you will need to sew the pair of fabric squares for one sachet.

First, pin Right sides of the fabric squares together. The ‘Right’ side of the front square will have the image(s) you stamped or the fabric pattern.
Using a sewing machine, begin to sew a 1/2″ seam starting about 1.5″ from a corner, then down the 3 raw edges. Finish the seam about 1.5″ away from the last corner on the side you began, leaving approximately 2″ gap to insert the balsam. Clip the corners after sewing.

Turn the fabric square Right side out and press seams. Your sewn sachet squares should look like this:

Step 3 – Fill sachet with loose balsam

At this point you will need to fill your sewn sachet with the loose balsam fir buds.

Carefully add the loose Balsam Fir inside the fabric sachet where the gap is. I like to use a small scoop or funnel to do this. You will probably use about 1 cup of the loose buds for one sachet. Fill them as thin or bulky as you desire.

Step 4 – sew up the balsam sachet gap

The last step is to sew up the gap you left in the sachet. You will need to sew this by hand after you’ve filled the balsam. Use a whip stitch if you would like an inconspicuous stitch.

Give a little squeeze to your DIY Christmas sachet and enjoy the heavenly balsam scent!

Ideas for Balsam Sachet

I bet you can come up with lovely ideas for your homemade balsam sachets. Tuck them in your drawers, in a basket with your Christmas pillows & blankets, or give them as hostess or teacher’s gifts. Leave them under bed pillows for a cozy Christmas scent before falling asleep.

For gifting, I tucked my balsam sachets into a plain white gift box, adorned with a clay tag and Christmas greenery.
