What is Scandinavian Christmas Decor?

First, what exactly is Scandinavian style, especially in regard to Christmas?

The style originates from the Nordic & Scandinavian countries so it has a light and wintery feel to it. The Scandinavian countries are known as Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. If you add Iceland and Finland to the group, they are all known as Nordic countries. Since these beautiful countries have long winters and short days of winter, the home decor style tends to favor lots of white and lighting. I can’t imagine having only 6 hours or less of daylight during winter solstice! It makes sense that the Scandinavian style features anything LIGHT and BRIGHT.

Scandinavian style also often includes elements of nature and soft yarn textures. Knitting is a favorite pastime for those long cold winters.

What is Nordic style Christmas?

Nordic Christmas style brings to mind Fair Isle and cable knit sweaters, reindeer figures, twig stars, cute gnomes, and bunting. If you are looking for products with this style, look no further than my BEST SCANDINAVIAN DECOR FINDS.

How can I decorate my Scandinavian style for Christmas?

If you wish to bring some of these elements into your home, try these Nordic Christmas décor ideas:

Scandinavian Christmas Decorations

Start with simple natural elements.

Scandinavian Christmas decor begins with simple trees, wreaths, and garland sourced from nature. The Nordic Christmas trees tend to have sparse branches versus full. They are decorated with simple ornaments and sparse garland. Both yarn garlands and bunting are popular with Nordic Christmas trees.

The little pine tree I decorated below has a crochet garland and just a few blue ball ornaments and clay tag ornaments.

Scandinavian inspired wreaths are also kept simple with minimal adornments. Here I just added vintage-inspired goat bells:

Stars made from twigs are a rustic idea found in Scandinavian Christmas decor. You’ll often find stars of any shape and size in Scandinavian designs.

Add textures made from yarn.

What better way to spend those long winters than with knitting and crochet projects at the ready? I can’t help but think of Nordic style when I see chunky knit blankets, cabled knits, and reindeer patterns. One of these days I’d love to knit an intricately patterned sweater in that style.

Here I’ve used a simple CHUNKY KNIT THROW as a Christmas tree skirt:

Hanging from a white cabinet is this Nordic style stocking made from a textured sweater with a matching clay tag: (you can find both projects in my Christmas Craft & Decor eBook listed above)

The craft book also contains the instructions to make this garland and sweet Nordic inspired Christmas ornament – a miniature yarn project! I just love the sweet mini knitting needles and stockinette knit project:

Use light wood tones instead of dark.

Since the Nordic folks tend to crave any kind of natural light during those short days of winter, they also tend to favor light toned woods over dark. (Any trip to IKEA is a testament to that.)

Walls and furniture are often painted white and natural wood tones are preferred. Scandinavian Christmas décor ideas wouldn’t be complete without including these light tones.

Try incorporating the lighter wood look into your Scandinavian Christmas decor by using natural wood candle sticks and even natural wood utensils on the dinner table! They are washable and reusable.

Light wood beads and mini wood houses also offer Nordic appeal. Gather them together for a minimalist centerpiece. I found these little natural wood bird houses at the craft store – check the aisle with pre-made wood pieces.
