How to crochet a purse

There are different types of crochet bags, and this one works up simply to form a small, but sturdy bag. It is the perfect size to hold small projects or for running quick errands.

NOTES: You will begin crocheting by working single crochet rows directly onto the wood purse handle. Next, you will work textured ‘nupp’ rows for the top of the bag, increasing stitches in some rows to widen the bag. Next, you will work half double crochet (hdc) rows in front and back loops to add texture to the body of the bag. Lastly, you will repeat for the 2nd side of the bag, then seam the two sides together.

What yarn is best for a crochet bag for summer?

Cotton sturdy yarn is the best choice for a strong bag, as are linen or bamboo yarns. You want the bag to ‘breathe’ in the summer, and these natural fibers are great for that purpose.

Instructions to make the handbag are as follows…

Handbag Crochet Pattern

Follow the instructions below in the order indicated.

NOTE – Ch 1 does not count as a st. You can place a sm to keep track of first st in increase rows.

Use size J crochet hook for handbag.

You will be working from the top of the handbag to the bottom.

Textured ‘nupp’ stitches are created by working [sc, dc, sc] into the same stitch in one row (rows 2 and 4), and then working into the last sc only of the ‘nupp’ stitch in the next row (rows 3 and 5). Push the ‘nupp’ toward RS.

Top of Bag:

Base Row (on handle): Work 27 sc stitches directly onto the wood handle for the handbag. Turn. (27 sts)

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in 1st st and in each st across. Turn. (27 sts)

Textured Nupp Pattern Repeat:

Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in 1st 2 sts, *[sc, dc, sc] into next st, sc in next 3 sts; rep from * across until last st, sc in last st. Turn. (39 sts – 6 ‘nupps’ made)

Row 3 (RS): Ch 1, sc in 1st st, *sc in next 3 sts, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * across until last 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts. Turn. (27 sts)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in 1st 4 sts, *[sc, dc, sc] into next st, sc in next 3 sts; rep from * across, ending last repeat with sc in last 2 sts. Turn. (39 sts – 6 ‘nupps’ made)

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in 1st 2 sts, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st, *sc in next 3 sts, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * across until last 4 sts, sc in last 4 sts. Turn. (27 sts)

Next you will be increasing stitches in the next 2 rows to widen the handbag.

Increase Rows:

Inc Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, work 2 sc in FLO of 1st st, sc in FLO of each st across until last st, work 2 sc in FLO of last st. Turn. (29 sts)

Inc Row 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc in BLO of 1st st, sc in BLO of each st across until last st, work 2 sc in BLO of last st. Turn. (31 sts)

Work Textured Nupp Pattern Repeat for 4 more rows. You will have 31 sts on Rows 3 and 5 of pattern and will be creating 7 ‘nupps’ in Rows 2 and 4.

Body of Bag:

At this point you will work the rest of the body of the handbag in half double crochet rows, with no more increasing stitches.

Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, hdc in FLO of first and each st across. Turn. (31 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in BLO of first and each st across. Turn. (31 sts)

Rep Rows 1-2 five more times (until full length measures approx. 10.5”).

Work Row 1 one last time.

Fasten off.

Repeat all steps above to create a 2nd side of handbag on 2nd wood handle.

Block both handbag sides if desired.

SEAMING:

Align two sides of handbag WS together.

Join yarn at first row of Textured Pattern Repeat that has 31 sts (after increase rows).

Working through both sides of bag, seam together two pieces down side edges, across bottom, and up remaining side edges using the sl st to join.

FINISHING:

You can optionally add finished edges to the upper rows where the handbag opens.

Join yarn at first row of one side of bag, near handle.

Working through the top open edges of bag, work single crochet stitches evenly across top until you reach the other handle.

Repeat for other side.

Weave in remaining loose ends to WS.

Important Tips for Crocheting your bag

Some things to keep in mind as you crochet the bag are:

  • Try to crochet in a consistent manner so that the two sides will be the same size.
  • The crochet sides are not reversible. The ‘nupp’ stitches pop out on the Right Side (RS).
  • It’s a good idea to use a stitch marker (sm) to keep track of the first st in each row when working the increase rows.
  • No need to count stitches after rows 2 and 4 of Textured Nupp Pattern Repeat, since the ‘nupp’ stitches will have temporarily increased the stitch count.
  • Remember to work into the 3rd stitch only of the ‘nupp’ stitches when closing them up in rows 3 and 5.

Finished Size

The finished crochet bag measures approximately 9.5″ width by 11″ length.

Using your Textured Bobble Crochet Bag

Now it is time to enjoy using your crocheted bag for errands or beach trips in the warm weather. It’s sturdy enough to hold small items and the beautiful design looks lovely. Friends would love receiving one of these crochet totes as a perfect gift, too.
