Easy Knit Mug Warmer - free pattern

Easy Knit Mug Warmer – Free Pattern!

You poured your favorite morning coffee or tea and then something distracts you…a little while later you realize the beverage lost its enticing heat.  Sigh.

That’s part of the allure, isn’t it?  Holding a cozy warm mug in your hands, but not too hot to burn you.  Mug warmers are a functional way to keep that drink warm for a little while longer, and they’re especially cute to look at.

I’ve got an easy knit pattern for you to create your own mug warmer.  It’s a simple rectangle knit that will slide right over your mug.  Beginning knitters need not worry – the pattern is simple to follow, yet it results in a lovely textured appeal.  I used the ‘Double alternate andalou stitch’ which is what creates the interesting texture.

Supplies:

US Size 15 straight knitting needles (you can find various sizes here)

Approx. 30 yards (total) of Medium weight (4) yarn, doubling the strands of yarn. (I used Bernat Super Value acrylic in the color Soft Grey)

Cast on 26 stitches (you are using 2 strands of yarn throughout), leaving approx. 4-5 inches tail.

Rows 1 and 3 (RS): Knit.

Row 2: K2, *p4, k2; rep from * to end.

Row 4: P2, *p1, k2, p3; rep from * to end.

Rows 5-8: repeat Rows 1-4.

Row 9: Knit.

Bind off.  Leave approx. 4-5 inches tail.

You should have two (double-stranded) tails at one short end of your rectangle (see photo below).

Slip one of the strands of a tail through a hole in the direct opposite corner of your rectangle, then tie the two strands together.  Do the same with the strands of your other tail.  You’ve now joined the rectangle, allowing for an opening for the mug handle.

Now simply slip your warmer over your mug with the opening at the handle. Depending on the girth of your mug, you can simply adjust the strands here for a tighter or looser fit. Feel free to trim the tail ends once you’re satisfied with the fit.
