Decking the Dining Room

The halls are getting decked for Christmas.  Keeping with my simple living theme, this year I toned things way down.  Live greenery and plaid patterns are what make this room festive.  I’m a big fan of using what you already own for decor, but putting a new twist on pieces. Hopefully I succeeded in creating a simple farmhouse Christmas dining room to gather in.

Live Greenery

We added a small live tree by the window, which I placed in a galvanized bucket I’ve owned for years.  The tree is adorned with a wood garland I purchased and festive glittered stars I crafted several years ago.  The burlap coffee sack came in handy to hide the tree stand.

Next I placed leftover trimmings from our large Christmas tree on the chandelier, along with pine cones I’ve had in my stash for years.  I also added real greenery was added to the faux wreath on the window. A handmade yarn pom-pom wreath hangs on the cupboard door.

I placed just a handful of items on the farmhouse table, like this cute little tree I found at Michael’s a few years ago.  The plaid ribbon was a great find last year from TJMaxx.

Farmhouse Style Practicality

In the past I would spend a full week (or more) decorating our home for Christmas, covering every nook and cranny with STUFF.  This year I didn’t even end up touching the rest of this room with decor.  It’s a bit of a relief! Sigh.

We previously had a white cabinet in the left corner, but decided to exchange it with a bookshelf from the living room.  It made more sense to define this room as a combination dining/library room, since we do the majority of our homeschool educating here.  I like the cozy and lived-in feel the books bring.  It’s a good idea to make each room work for you and your lifestyle, especially with limited rooms to work with.  We enjoy both books and breakfast in here, and often at the same time!

How do you combine purposes in your rooms?  I’d love to hear.

Thanks for stopping by. Feel free to Pin this farmhouse Christmas dining room for later! Also be sure to check out my 12 Days of Christmas ideas for spending time with those you love.

I used to follow your old blog. Nice to find you here. I also try to live simply and about 3 years ago downsized from a 3bd/3ba home to a tiny 570′ farmhouse. I prayed about moving and bought the little farmhouse sight unseen, online and have never been happier. God is so good. I really like the dining room and simple decor you chose. The greens in the chandelier are so sweet. What a charming space for your family. Merry Christmas.

How wonderful, Pamela! Your Dad is also very blessed to be living with you. That’s a beautiful way to re-purpose your living room.
