How to Make a Scroll Sign with Kraft Paper
Are you a fan of calligraphy on scrolled Kraft paper? A scroll sign is one of my favorite types of wall art, especially when it depicts an inspirational quote or phrase. Today I’ve got a tutorial showing how to make one. This project didn’t cost me a cent and it was pretty easy to make. If you have scrolled Kraft paper, a pencil, ruler, and permanent black marker on hand you can do this, too!
I decided to design my large Kraft paper scroll sign for a new creative desk area in our living room. I thought it fitting to write “Keep Calm and Create” on the sign. It will be a simple reminder to stay calm, pray, and focus on creativity.
Perhaps you already have the following supplies on hand and can take the hour or so it takes to make a scroll sign of your own. What would your phrase be?

Supplies
- Brown Kraft paper, approximately 18″ wide by 36″ long
- black permanent marker
- ruler, pencil, scissors
How to Make Scroll Sign
First you’ll want to decide what your sign will say. It’s best to print out the phrase with a calligraphy script ahead of time, so that you can use this as an example.
(Pssst – I’ve got a free printable for you with 2 phrases you can mimic. See how to get it at the end of this post.)
Cut your brown Kraft paper in the size you want on your wall. I cut mine to be 18″ wide by 36″ long. My finished size on the wall was 18″ by 22″ long, with the extra length being ‘scrolled’ inward.
Set your paper flat on a table and use heavy items at the top & bottom to hold the scroll ends open.
Find the center and mark a horizontal line there. This is where the center of your phrase will be.
Similarly, mark horizontal line(s) above and below the center line where you will write the rest of your phrase.
Using your printed phrase as a guide, free-hand the letters with a pencil first. Make any changes you want with the pencil.
When you’re happy with the phrase, copy it over with a permanent marker. To get the look of calligraphy, fill in the downward lines of the script a bit heavier with the marker.
Erase any remaining pencil marks after you’re happy with the permanent marker script.
Hang the scroll sign
Now it’s time to hang the Kraft paper scroll sign. Let the top and bottom ends scroll inward a bit and keep in place with paper clips or tape.
Double up some twine and loop it through the top scroll edge. Tie in a knot and hide the knot within the scroll.
Hang from a nail on the wall.
Enjoy the scroll in your favorite spot! I’m feeling inspired by this one in my new creative desk corner.
