Crochet Heart Garland Pattern
I shared this crochet heart pattern a while ago, using size 4 cotton yarn to make smaller hearts. I also shared 5 WAYS TO USE THE CROCHET HEARTS in that post and featured them on my VALENTINE GIFT BAGS.
For this garland project I used super bulky size 6 yarn to make larger hearts. The finished large hearts measure about 5″ wide by 4″ high.
I also added small crochet ‘labels’ with THESE JEWELRY CHARMS to add personality to the hearts.
Step 1 – Make Crochet Hearts
The first step for the crochet heart garland is to crochet 5 to 7 hearts using the following pattern…
Easy Crochet Heart pattern:
Using super bulky yarn, Ch 2 loosely.
Row 1: 2 SC in 2nd Ch from hook, turn. (2 stitches)
Row 2: Ch 1, SC in each st across, turn. (2 stitches)
At this point, you will start to increase the stitches in the rows:
Row 3: Ch 1, SC in first st, 2 SC in last st, turn. (3 stitches)
Row 4: Ch 1, 2 SC in first st , SC in next st, 2 SC in last st, turn. (5 stitches)
Row 5-6: Ch 1, 2 SC in first st, SC across, 2 SC in last st, turn. (7, then 9 stitches)
Row 7-8: Ch 1, SC across, turn. (9 stitches)
At this point, you will form the top of the heart shape:
Row 9: Ch 1, DC in first st, 2 DC in each of next 2 sts, SL in next 3 sts, 2 DC in each of next 2 sts, DC in last st, SL in same (last) st.
Bind off. Weave in ends. One heart made!
Repeat the steps above for each heart.
Step 2 – Add labels to Crochet Hearts (optional)
Next you can customize your pretty crochet hearts with ‘labels’. I simply crocheted a small rectangle in a contrasting color from the heart. These are the same labels I created for my CHRISTMAS TICKING STRIPE ORNAMENTS.
Make the crochet labels for the hearts with this simple crochet pattern using COTTON YARN and a size G crochet hook:
- Chain 7.
- SC in 2nd chain from hook and across. Turn.
- Ch 2. HDC across. Turn.
- Ch 1. SC across.
- Fasten off.
Next, thread some cotton yarn through a JEWELRY CHARM and through the crochet label to join them together.
Lastly, sew the crochet label to a heart using the same cotton yarn. Another way to attach the label to the crochet heart is to simply hot-glue it on.
Step 3 – Attach Crochet Hearts to Yarn to Make Garland
The final step is to create a long garland of the crochet hearts.
You will need to cut a long length of the COTTON YARN, a little over 6 feet should work. Twine would also be a nice alternative to hang the hearts.
Next, thread the yarn through the top corners and the back of each crochet heart using a tapestry needle.
Space each heart equally apart on the crochet heart garland. I chose to add crochet labels to 3 of 5 hearts, then spaced them in alternate positions.
Make a loop at each end of the garland, to use for hanging.
Display Your Crochet Heart Garland
The garland would make a perfect valentine garland, don’t you think? You can hang it up to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your family. This is such a fun valentine crochet pattern to add to your winter projects.
The heart garland would also look sweet displayed in a baby’s nursery. Use blue or pink yarn, or any color you choose!
The inspirational words on the JEWELRY CHARMS can provide meaningful encouragement for whoever looks upon them.
The crochet heart garland could also be used as a wedding decoration – endless possibilities! Perhaps you could add jewelry charms with romantic sentiments or customized with names.
I hope you were inspired by this easy crochet garland pattern. Feel free to make it unique for YOU and your loved ones.
