Modern Farmhouse Bathroom
Our family tends to take on home renovations in the summer. I guess it’s just an easier time to turn the house upside down! Last summer our kitchen got a Modern Farmhouse kitchen makeover. Two summers ago we made small renovations to our bathroom to give it updated farmhouse style. It dawned on me that I had never shared this modern farmhouse bathroom on the blog, so that’s my plan today. I hope it gives you inspiration to take on small changes in your home, too, without breaking the bank.
Full disclosure – we hired out the tile, toilet replacement, and carpentry work in this bathroom, knowing those tasks were beyond our skills. Yet we saved money by keeping the existing vanity & light fixture, and making the wall shelf ourselves. We also didn’t change the tub/shower.
Modern Farmhouse Bathroom Tour
Welcome to our updated modern farmhouse bathroom…
This is the view as you enter from the hallway upstairs. It’s a small bathroom for 4 people, but we make do.
The most striking update is the floor. We picked out a modern style ceramic tile with timeless black & white appeal.
Before we go any further, it’s important to see how blah the bathroom was before… (note the yucky vinyl tiles and ancient toilet):
The new floor tile, beadboard, and chair rail on the walls make such a difference in lightening and brightening up the small room!
Bathroom Vanity
One place where we saved a good chunk of money was with the bathroom vanity. We ended up keeping the original vanity and faucet (which had been replaced recently), and simply changed out the hardware. I gave the vanity a thorough cleaning and fresh white paint before it got re-installed over the new floor.
You can see the original white hardware in the photo below.
We chose new black hinges and knobs to update the vanity with farmhouse style.
Farmhouse Woods
We also wanted to add rustic woods to this space to give it modern farmhouse flair. I found an amazing medicine cabinet from this Etsy shop….
I also found a matching frame at Homegoods – perfect place to showcase a circa 2011 photo of the family!
Lastly, we added a shelf over the toilet to hold our hand towels and other supplies in a basket.
I don’t have any in-process photos of the shelf, but these photos may show you the general idea. We purchased rustic boards at Home Depot, trimmed them to shelf size, then joined 3 pieces together. We cut another piece of the board in half lengthwise to make two small pieces, then screwed these two pieces into the 3 wider pieces to join them. Next, we screwed in two black brackets alongside the small pieces of wood. (By ‘we’, I mean my husband!)
Crochet Pieces
I softened the modern farmhouse bathroom look with a couple of handmade crochet pieces.
First, a crochet basket on the back of the bathroom door to hold washcloths. I was kind of winging it when I made this basket, but I’ll see if I can come up with a similar crochet pattern for you.
This next addition to the bathroom was made recently – a crochet vase hanger next to the shower!
I’ve got the free pattern for that coming soon to the blog. It was super easy to make and I’m loving the summer feel it brings to the bathroom.
Light Fixture
In addition to saving money by keeping the existing vanity and faucet, we also decided to keep our existing light fixture. It had a chrome finish before, but I simply spray painted it black for an update. The fixture was a nice Pottery Barn light that we had for years, and it just didn’t need replacing.
Another way we saved money was by keeping the paint on the walls over the chair rail. We used a small can of the same paint we had on hand (Marilyn’s Dress by Benjamin Moore) to just do touch ups.
I hope this post has given you inspiration and ideas for updating your bathroom inexpensively. It’s a good idea to upcycle when we can and save money!
